I have an older HDTV, a Mitsubishi 65" RPTV purchased 8 years ago. It only accepts component input. How can I take advantage of the newer HD-DVD or Blu-Ray that only outputs HDMI? Is there any way to output HDMI and input component?
Thanks
Never mind, I was being stupid. If the unit only allows for 1080i then who cares?
I need a new video display but given and I blew 5 grand on this only 8 years ago makes me angry with myself.

No. HDMI is a digital source, component is analog.
However, both HD-DVD and BluRay players do output HD material up to 1080i via component (1080i likely being the highest res your 8 yr old set will do anyway--CRT based, yes?).
The only need to run either format's player via HDMI is to either get full 1080p for HD material (which your TV won't accept anyway) or to access the SD DVD upconversion. Via component, your old DVDs may only go either 480i/p. If regular DVD looks good on your set now, expect them to look roughly the same from an HDDVD/BD player via component.

I did a Live search and found a HDMI to Analog converter that may help you out.
http://www.av-sales.co.uk/HDMI-VGA-CONVERTER-139-.htm (HDMI to Analog output)

Im sure there is more most of what I found was Analog to HDMI output. Still im sure there is more since there are so many other buyers of old tech who will not want to upgrade for a bit. Looks like they cost a bit too.
Cheers
An HDMI to component converter is not needed. Both BD and HD-DVD players will output high def resolution over component (they just won't upscale SD DVDs over component).

So they allow 1080I via component with HDCP Dvd's? I know when this all started I read they would not. Nice that they do.
Still won't buy one till the format wars are over (Beta/VHS/Laser) got me last time.

They only pass 1080i from HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray disks. They won't upconvert standard DVD's (that have protection) over component.

The war may never be over (IMO, both formats will be here for many years to come), so I guess you miss out on high def movies. There is a huge difference between upscaled SD DVDs and either HD-DVD or BD.
