Ok I posted a few weeks ago that I was planning to buy the Sammy HLS-5686w, since the price is right in my budget from BB. Yesterday I went to BB to check out the Tv, it was not in store but I started to look around and I saw that the All the DLP's that were there including the new models, the PQ was not that great compared to the plasmas that were in the store, the plasmas PQ were crisp and clear. With all the DLP's I noticed that the viewing angle was a concern, if you were standing and looking at the picture it was not very clear but if you ducked a little in the seating position the picture would be bright. I also noticed that the sides were dark and the center of the Picture was only bright.

I also saw the new sammy HlT series I believe, are they better, should I invest in this yeras technology or stick with last years HLS. I would be playing games, dvd and tv viwing Please help, I have two weeks before I make my purchase.

First, you are correct that DLPs have poor vertical angle viewing, but unless you watch TV at home while standing up, it's not relevant. Yes, I would generally recommend new technology (HLT) over last year's models (HLS). But in the end, you need to buy what looks best to your eyes.

Ok, so once I bring the tv home the PQ will be better than what I saw in the store right? Also, Since I am interested in the 56", I can get the HLS for around $1200 at BB but the 50" HLT is for around the same price as well, so shold I buy the 50" new HLT or stick with the 56" HLS. Whats the significant difference between the two. What will I miss if I go with the HLS series. Also I will be seating 7 -8 feet away. For me its a lot of money that I am investing, so I need to be sure that I buy the right one. I have windows from which ample light comes, should that be taken into consideration. Lastly, should I pick up the Tv stand from BB that are $100 off right now. Or should I look elsewhere. Will I get something better for leass price.

Reading the threads here is informative no doubt about it, However, on the flip side it also is confusing, the more I read the more I find out that each and every model has some flaws in them. Can someone tell me if the flaws that people post are something that one can live with or there are people who are too picky and complain about evry small little details.

So what I am asking is that recommend me a tv, Samsung as from my reading this is the best tv out there (DLP). my budget is $1200 - $1300. I am looking at a size of 50 to 56". Bigger size would be prefered meaning 56", however, if someone can point out that the 50" are better than the 56", then I can reconsider.

Forum members, help me buy my first bigscreen TV

I own an HL-S5086 which has all of the same features as the HL-S5686 except for the screen size. My viewing distance is about 10-11 feet which I think is in the correct range for a 50" screen. I'm a very happy camper with this TV. It appears that the HL-Sxx86 series has generally performed well. I think the main difference is that some of the HLT series use an LED light source vs a bulb in the HLS series.

I assume that both sets are 720p since you say the prices are comparable. Make sure that you're happy with what you see from 7-8 feet away for both sets (crouch down to get the viewing angle right if that's what it takes). I mention this because you might find it's a little close for viewing a 56" set. If everything you see is equal (BillP is correct - in the end, that's what's important), go with the newer technology.

From 7-8 feet away, the 50" display would be fine for you. I have a 56" Samsung DLP and sit 11' away.

What I saw in the store didn't make me happy with the samsungs. However, I have read a lot of posts where people have said that the PQ is much better at home since the stores use the factory mode. So I am assuming that the sammyis that I saw will look far better than the stores. Also when I was looking at the stores the tvs showed a lot of noise, is that something whichcan be corrected by a callibaration DVD, if so which one? that is if you guys use any. Where can I find info about the screen size and seating distance. Billp which 56" sammy model do you have?

I have a 4-year-old 720p model (HLN567w), which has worked perfectly for me and is still on the 1st bulb. The noise is likely due to all the splitters they use in the stores (poor signals). And yes, they have all their displays on torch mode in stores. It's unfortunate that you can't get a realistic idea of how these displays look at home.

Just out of curosity, Does anyone kno whow the JVC models are? Is it even good. This thread is dominant with samsung and sony. So even if JVC is good it does not get any attention.

JVC LCOS (DILA) sets are very good and worth looking at.
