View Full Version : What cables do I actually need to run?

Brand new to this forum. Great stuff and ideas. My first post.

Remodeling a basement room. It is to be a media viewing room.
The viewing screens are a 50"+ plasma or lcd flat, with three 15" screens
mounted in a row below. All will have tuners and I plan to route a basic RF cable
to each one through the wall for CATV reception.

I want a nice clean look and want the screens to stand alone.
All video/audio equipment will be installed in cabinetry against the wall immediately to the right of the viewing chairs/couch. To connect this equipment
to the screens I will need to make 25 foot cable runs.

Equipment to include:
cable converter box
VCR's
DVD player(s)/recorder
PC
possible security camera's
room for expansion

My plans for cables between components and screens include:
2 HDMI
2 RGB composite sets (should I have L/R audio with these?)
2 A/V composite sets
2 "S" cables
1 F cable
Cat 5 or 6

Needless to say this will create a wall of face plates which I would like to avoid, even though they will be hidden behind the 50" screen.
Is this too much? Not enough?

Right now looking for ideas and suggestions before I move forward. All cable runs
will be 25' or less.

Thanks in advance.

I suppose you could use splitters/control boxes to cut down on the multiple cable runs unless you plan to use multiple sources at the same time using the same type of connection to different displays (IE, 2 HDMI sources to 2 different displays at the same time).

Here's how I plan to use this room:

With 1 big screen and 3 smaller screens.
I will use the big screen for primary viewing...TV, movies.
The smaller screens will be used simultaneously when multiple
sporting events are airing. This will give the ability to switch on
the more exciting event to the big screen or switch around during
commercials. It also comes in handy during mulitple news channel
coverage of breaking news or disasters.
