I am moving into a new house and we would like to get a new TV. And we bumped into a BIG problem - we cannot find anymore 36"-40" CRT TVs.
The room where the TV set will stay has plenty of natural light and it is very bright (3 walls FULL of windows!!!).
We do NOT have any HiDef signal and we do NOT plan to have. So all the signals will be in SD from a digital cable box and 480p from a DVD player.
The sitting distance is 9'-12' and we won't sit any further than that for sure. (we understood that for this viewing distance range we will need a 37"-42" monitor - no larger) - please comment).
The viewing angles will be very large, because the room arangement forced us to have a sectional sofa. So we need a monitor with very good viewing angles.
We like very much the CRTs but we cannot find anymore one that is 37"-42". So we will have to look for a plasma/LCD/rear projection.
All the plasma/LCD/rear projection TVs are not able (apparently) to provide excellent image with SD. Please comment or let us know which specific models are good with SD.
We like the plasmas very much but we are concern with the black bars that will be left (remeber that we will be watching 480i 95% of the time). Basically we are afraid of burning the screen. In top of that my son will be using this monitor for tons of Playstation games. And he is only 10 and I am afraid that fir sure he will forget the menu of a game ON and that will burn in the screen for sure.
Let us know if you are aware of any plasmas that do not have burn in problems.
We kind of like the LCDs (to a lesser extent than plasmas for sure). But I am concerned with the narrow viewing angles, very poor response time, very poor brightness and contrast and the blur (I watch tons of sports).
We like the price of rear projection TVs, but we have a VERY bright room and we've seen that they do not perform well at all in bright conditions. Also it seemed to us that they have very narrow viewing angles.
Bottom line - I cannot find arguments to spend tons of money for something that we will not be using (HD) and for something that we will have to accept by making a LOT of compromises.
Specifically we are looking to spend MAX $2000 (or at least as posible) for a monitor that will satisfy our requirements.
Thank you for reading all this and please let us know your recomandations.
All the best.
