View Full Version : samsung led vs samsung dlp
srt2fast4u 06-07-07, 09:31 AM I am buying a tv very soon for my new condo. I will be sitting about 12- 15 feet away so i would like as big as i can get but i dont want a bad picture. I guess i want a 1080p since that seems to be the future of tv. my question whats the deal with the led samsungs are they better then the std dlp. the 61 inch let looks nice but for the same price you can get a 67 samsung at costco. If the led is better technology then i will error towards that side.
LED is newer, only in the second year. Bulb DLP is older and more perfected in some ways. There are a lot of different opinions about the two in picture quality. Many like the the old bulb DLP better, some prefer the LED. LED has fewer moving parts and doesn't need bulb replacements approx every three years or so.
You have to go look at them in person and see which you like better. It really comes down to what you like looking at better.
Warhawk71 06-07-07, 02:36 PM LED sets have no color wheel, no bulbs to replace (LED should last at least 20,000 hours, some say significantly longer), and most folks susceptible to RBE say it is reduced or eliminated in the LED models due to the design (no color wheel).
Also depends on how long you keep your sets - if you change them relatively frequently, you may not care about changing out the bulbs, as you may not keep it that long.
As for which look better, that's up to you. ;)
aaronwt 06-07-07, 03:29 PM At 12 to 15 feet get the 67" set. I'm at 9 feet with my Samsung HLR 61" set and it's too small. I'll be replacing it soon with a Toshiba 65" which is still to small for me at 9 feet, but the price increases alot to go larger. I would go with another samsung, but for the same sub $2k price I can get a newer model 65" toshiba instead of the 61" Samsung.
I was torn between the LED and lamp versions, but finally went lamp (HL-T5676) for the following primary reasons:
1) I have concerns about the long-term output and color stability of the LEDs. When a lamp goes out, you replace the lamp, and you basically have a new TV. With LED, you are stuck with the light engine for the life, even if the color and output drifts. I posted this question in the calibration forum and was not reassured of LED stability:

2) The HL-Txx76 series is ultra-thin, about 3" less than the xx87/89.
3) Excellent performance of last year's lamp series, HL-Sxx87/88 and the (assumed) ease of calibrating the similar HL-Txx76.
I'd also caution against a final judgement through in-store comparisons unless you know the input, lighting conditions, and settings are identical.
GodfatherX 06-07-07, 05:37 PM saw both personally and thought the 87 dlp series looked better overall, contrast seemed generally better
Saleen4971 06-07-07, 06:04 PM i was under the impression that the HL-T was the LED model
from what i have seen and heard, the LED's should last much longer, but on a bigger set they are not yet bright enough for anything over 61". and even at that they are lagging a bit. if you want a BIG set (65+) i would recommend the Mitsubishi's. they look AMAZING with their 7 color wheel.
3) Excellent performance of last year's lamp series, HL-Sxx87/88 and the (assumed) ease of calibrating the similar HL-Txx76.

I have had very bad luck with my HL-S6187W. It has been out of commission more than in since I bought it in 10/29/06. I have had five appointments with two different lowest bidder repair companies selected by Samsung. The last time they came to pick the set up when the bulb went out, we had to wait three weeks for the first available appointment. The set has cost me two days of work and my wife another two days. But Samsung did the right thing - LOL - they told us they would give us a 90 extension on the warranty. The fact is, the set has been out of commission for more than 90 days - and that fact was clearly explained to Samsung. My nephew bought a 5? inch Samsung DLP last year on my recommendation and the color wheel went out two weeks after they started watching it. The color wheel was on back order, so I am assuming that this was not the first color wheel that went out. Maybe these were fluke sets - that can happen. However, the service that we have received from Samsung and their low bidder repair services is not a fluke - it Samsun policy. I have bought two Samsung DLP's but will not buy another.
Thanks, Darrell Tschakert, Rockville, MD.
