View Full Version : Fireworks Footage (HV20)
I haven't seen anyone else post any, so I figured I would.
The Canon HV20 has a Fireworks preset, so I put it to use at the Navy Pier fireworks. I just chose the ending of it in Premiere Pro 2.0, deinterlaced it, and exported it to 720p WMV file using Canopus ProCoder Express.
Enjoy!

EDIT: Changed URL because it's taking a lot of bandwidth from original site.

Not sure if everyone know this, but Navy Pier is in Chicago, IL U.S.A...

That was outstanding! The motion was true to form....for me I think it just pushed me closer to buying the HV20...I posted some time ago that there should be a thread for clips but that idea went nowhere...thanks for sharing that clip with us....list more if you can.

kedelbach 06-07-07, 04:41 PM Thanks for posting that. The low-light capabilities of the HV20 (reflections in the water) camera are superb. I've just started fooling around with mine (did some indoor tests with overhead light, candle light, and almost no light at 1080i and 24p, all were impressive), but when I think about how my previous camcorder (Canon ZR50 from 2002) would have handled those fireworks... wow we've come a long way!
cheers
Kurt
Also, it's weird that you cannot change even the exposure in fireworks mode. But considering how the footage turned out, it seems that Canon knew what it was doing with that setting.

Luthyr, what date did you film that? Reason I ask is was there a full or 3/4 moon to help with the light. Once again I was very impressed with that clip you posted.
Jake
That was really cool. The one thing I did notice was that most of the fireworks' colors were red. Only brief glimses of other colors appeared, and then only one, two, or three times only. But despite all that, your video was great. Congratulations.
And....I noticed the sound was decent. Of course in an environment like that, it would be hard to hear any of the reported noises from the cam itself or from the handling of said cam.
Again, nice job.
Mike
I just filmed that Wednesday (June 6th), but I don't really remember seeing the moon any.
I just got my Rode VideoMic today (sounds nice :) ), but didn't get to use it for this footage.
I'd like to post all 12 minutes of the footage, but don't want to use up all my webspace.
greg_mitch 06-07-07, 09:49 PM Haven't seen this mentioned before but I think this is a good example of it. Do you feel that the 10x lens zoom is a limiting factor. A buddy of mine just bought a Sony with a 40x optical zoom and is ribbing me on wanting to get a cam with only 10x zoom.
Is 10x enough?
c.kingsley 06-07-07, 11:00 PM Honestly, I don't see how you could use a 40x zoom without also having the camera on a tripod. I think 40x optical is a cool feature, but if you plan to shoot a lot of your footage by hand you won't be able to zoom in to that degree without horrific shaking, even with OIS.
Edit-What I mean is that if you plan to use the camera a great deal on the tripod, then it might be worth it, but you should base your overall decision on the factors that are most important to you.
greg_mitch 06-07-07, 11:14 PM I agree that 40x is overkill and is a marketing item for advertising mostly. But just curious from users opinions if the 10x was enough.
I have never owned a camcorder before.
I just came back from China a week ago with 6 mini dv hidef tapes from at my 5 week old Canon HV20.
The lens shade jammed half open on the third day and I scotch taped it open for the rest of the trip. It is being repaired by Canon, hope to have it back next week.
I bought from B&H which I have used many times. The only thing is I could have bought it from Costco at the same price of $1000. B&H has a return policy of seven days. Costco 90 days. I told them if I had a choice in the future, since they would do nothing for me except give me Canon repair number, I would buy from Costco.
Your pics are great. I live in Bucktown about a mile or so from Navy Pier. I also have Premiere 2. How do you burn a disc in hd dvd or blue ray? I know Adobe is coming out with a new version of their video collection this month. It will contain Encore which will let you burn on blue ray burner. I still have not jumped into the "beta vhs war". I know Samsung is coming out at xmas with a full featured dual player.
