The Samsung. XX76S's guide tells you your choices if you have cable, but what if you have Directv like me. What does HRC and IRC mean? How do I know which one to use?

Please help.

"HRC" is harmonically related carriers. "IRC" is incrementally related carriers. These are ways the cable company can modulate the video signal to improve the quality of thier analog transmission.

if you're using antenna, then obviously use the antenna selection. broadcast TV and cable TV use an entirely different set of frequencies. broadcast channel 20 is actually somewhere around cable channel 72!! if you're using cable, start off with the cable-std setting...this is what most systems use..however, if that signal doesn't work very well, then try either the cable-hrc or cable-irc settings.

Those settings are only for the set's internal cable tuner, which you will not be using for DirecTV. Is your DirecTV box HD? If so, connect it via component video (3 RCA cables color coded red/green/blue plus red and white for audio) or HDMI.

If it's SD, use the best connection available on the DirecTV receiver (S-video or Composite). Do not use the threaded RF connector.
