I posted this question in the Audio/Speaker forum, but a kind soul suggested I may get more help here.

So the wife and I (and son) bought a new home and we (more so I) were lucky enough to find one with a large unfinished basement. I plan on turning it into a semi-dedicated home theater. We'll be able to control ambient light and soundproof to some extent, but I want to make the space flexible enough to to use as more a media/family room. It will most likely be roughly 20x24 (after the utility room and gym) or possibly the back of the room will be extended into an L shape to avoid partitioning the space too much.

Speaker budget will be under 3K Max. At this point, I am not looking for Brands as I have a list that I am still narrowing down. I am looking for some suggestions on Placement vs. Perfromance. I don't want to sacrifice the quality of the sound, but I also want a nice integration in the room. Will most likely go the projector route. What are your thoughts on the following:

1) Floorstanding built into the wall - does this compromise the sound? Cost prohibitive due to need for a custom cabinet or just built it into wall directly?

2) Better off with bookshelf in custom cabinet or wall mounted? Or are In-Wall speakers capable of great sound?

3) Build sub into wall as well?

4) In-wall vs. on-wall vs. in-ceiling surrounds?

Ideally I would just plop the floorstanders in the room but a 2 year old and another planned would see them as toys.

Thanks in advance for any helpful hints.

I wanted to integrate my surrounds as well. I used in-walls built in to columns:

I've been very pleased with both the look and the performance.
