The HDMI 1.3 revolution is starting soon.

I would not call HDMI 1.3 a revolution since they added the disclaimer that even if a device is HDMI 1.3, it still may not be fitted with all the features claimed for 1.3
Seems every 1.3 device must list the features it is capable of: and of course any connected device must also be HDMI 1.3 and have the same featureset
I would be happy if current HDMI protocols worked properly :o

By "revolution" I mean its a start. Someday we'll have a choice of devices, both source and display, making reasonably use of HDMI 1.3 capability - but of course that will take time. But no "revolution" comes without a start. HDTV started out really slow, too.

This is a good move. Sony is on the forefront with HDMI 1.3's unique video features such as wide colorspace support. I'm still waiting for source material to exploit it, but whatever works!

...and don't expect your current HDMI cable to work either.

why not?
I think I have read several times that the HDMI connection is being redesigned for 1.3 to be more robust.

I really don't think that's the case. They are making a new mini-connector I believe, but it's not a replacement. It's kind of like the mini-USB.
I do agree that the HDMI connector is lacking.

It seems that Sony's new strategy is to take the first mover advantage and earn a few bucks before their competition comes out with better products.
They get into the market first with the most advanced technology but the product is average. When the competition enters the market they better Sony.
Sony will be the first with an affordable 2K and 4K resolution projector but the competition will come out with better products.
The standard that Sony used to have is gone now. Sony is clinging on and running on past reputation. It's more hoopla than substance.

From what I have read, test with the full HDMI 1.3 spec show that it will only transmit about 5 feet with current cables. That is what the talk about a new cable is likely about.
