View Full Version : Holy Crap! God of War!
mohanman 06-08-07, 04:27 PM Dude, where have I been. this is like one of the best games ever! Maybe I was just turned off by the graphics on ps2, but with the ps3 the graphics are awesome!
One thing I dont understand, and I have no idea how they did it, but have you guys noticed that once you load up a save game, there is like absolutely no load times? How they heck did they manage to do that? NO load screens whatsoeveR??
Mo!
DubBucket 06-08-07, 04:41 PM Wait... those games are good? You should get the word out!
But really, they should have held on to GoW2 for another couple months, added a level, re-rendered a few things, and made it a PS3 game. They'd be selling more consoles.

Im sure it would be a bit more than rerendering a few things to make something into a ps3 game.
Pikasauce 06-08-07, 04:48 PM My thoughts exactly mohanman. GOW could quite possibly be one of the greatest games ever. Great story, characters, mythological background, etc. I love it. I do wish they could give them both a new HD coat of paint and release them for the PS3. Maybe someday.
Sonyxbr 06-08-07, 04:58 PM I have not played either GOW. Are they both equally good? Should I play GOW before GOW 2?
Pikasauce 06-08-07, 05:06 PM Definitely play GOW 1 first. It's a greatest hits now and only 20 clams, well worth the money.
HeadRusch 06-08-07, 05:06 PM Are you kidding?
GOW I and II are probably the best 3D Adventure-Fighting games ever, period.
Everything about it works.....theres no candy-assed Japana-WTF enemies like the stuff you gotta contend with it the Devil May Cry games (oh No, Evil Puppets...Evil Caterpilars..Evil Daiseys...EVIL MUSHROOMS!).......its just a straight up bloody action-fest with lots of cool boss battles, lots of moves and combos, and above all a cool storyline that kind of compels you to keep playing.
Yes, go buy the first game immediately for $19.99 or less.....enjoy it...then go snag part 2 Used.
mohanman 06-08-07, 05:33 PM I was quite suprised this is a ps2 game. I mean the graphics are pretty tight. I especially love the part when you are trying to get pandoras box. On top of a titan, that is sweet. But now I am stuck in that room that falls if you dont beat everyone. Its getting too hard!
Mo!

That's the point though, sure a few minor tweaks wouldn't make it a "next-gen" game, but the story and gameplay are good enough to make up for it. By "PS3 game" I just meant a game released on the PS3, not necessarily a game designed for the PS3.
Rock Daddy 06-08-07, 05:51 PM I did the same thing. Heard everyone talk about GOW so I went and picked it up for $19. I played the crap out of that game. It is definitly worth every penny.
dragonyeuw 06-08-07, 05:59 PM one of the best series ever, they'll remain forever in my gaming collection.
HeadRusch 06-08-07, 07:12 PM IN situations where you gotta kill an assload of bad-guys in no time, you gotta use your Rage of the Titans or whatever its called :) Press Both sticks, commence to whuppin ass.
Chris Ruhl 06-08-07, 09:58 PM Just currious: My wife wants to buy me a PS3 game for Fathers Day.
I'm kind of into RP games, I love things like Ultima. Better to get Elder Scrolls: Oblivion or GoW I & II?
DubBucket 06-08-07, 10:14 PM GoW has minimal RP apects and they're PS2 games. Oblivion for sure.

oblivion... no question if you want an rpg.
that said, after my first 100 hours of oblivion i took a week off to play GOW and must say it's better than advertised... so bleeping good.
and then back to oblivion which is right on the brink of "best... game... ever".

exactly, they would need to implement a whole new physics engine (did GoW even have one??), hopefully rework the AI, add in more dynamic shadow & light support, format sound to PCM, new animations for pretty much everything and so on :P
elikhom 06-09-07, 10:15 AM GoW is da bomb!

actually, while the game is quite good it is by no means perfect, for instance the camera can tend to cut out enemies so you can't see if the cyclops is about to smash your ass where they could have easily made it so the camera zooms out a bit to fit everything near you on screen. ;)
dpe8598 06-09-07, 12:21 PM Turning into one of my favorite series ever.
jhaines 06-09-07, 01:07 PM My opinion: the God Of War games are solid titles with great production values, but they're overhyped beyond belief.
The fighting system seems fairly deep, but on the default difficulty you can spam your way through the entire game with just one or two combos (boss fights excluded). Most of the environmental puzzles are painfully obvious, too.
Don't get me wrong -- the games are a slick package with a fair amount of meat inside -- they're just nothing groundbreaking.

snickersbar 06-09-07, 09:39 PM God of War is so good they should make a second one!

lol.
johnsmith808 06-10-07, 12:28 AM I'm playing God of War for the first time, and it is awesome. The action is intense, and the levels kind of remind me of what tomb raider once was:mysterious and awe-inspiring. This is the ultimate macho, testosterone game of all time.
I too wish it was a ps3 game, but I guess we'll have to wait till GOW 3.
Pikasauce 06-10-07, 12:51 AM They should make a movie based these games. Who is bad-ass enough to play Kratos? Bruce Willis comes to mind.
ninjachicken 06-10-07, 12:52 AM might not have to wait until gow3, heavenly sword might fill the void until then.
Pikasauce 06-10-07, 03:53 PM Yeah, I just downloaded the video trailor for Heavenly Sword, looks pretty promising. GOW sets the bar extremely high though, it will be tough to surpass.

Hrm.. I remember discussing this already...
edit- ah, maybe in another forum link (http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/03/13/brief-god-of-war-movie-updates/)
"Just in time for the highly anticipated video game God of War 2 to hit shelves today, game creator David Gaffe spoke briefly about the film adaptation in an Entertainment Weekly interview. Like a lot of big adaptation projects as of recent, it's moving along slowly but surely, with the latest being a nearly completed script.
In the interview, Gaffe's answer was short and sweet, right to the point.
There's a really good script written by David Self, who wrote Thirteen Days for Kevin Costner. I keep expecting them to call me and say it's dead, but my fingers are crossed. We'll be sending the script out to a huge-name director.
He also was asked about what actor would be his idol choice to play Kratos, the main character in the game, and without hesitation Gaffe answered Djimon Hounsou. You can read the full interview with Gaffe on EW.com, with the last few questions being about the movie. Although I'm not a fan of the game myself, I do understand that just like Prince of Persia, it could be converted into a pretty incredible adaptation. Let's hope it actually gets made and doesn't die in pre-production hell!"
I just got GOWI yesterday and I think it may be one of the best games I ever played. I have a question for anyone who has this game and a ps3. When you upscale the game do you find that there are still small black bars on the sides? Also, setting the game to progressive negates all of the scaling, correct? I have my PS3 set to scale in full mode with smoothing on.
Pikasauce 06-10-07, 06:58 PM Thanks for the heads up Dub-Bucket, that is pretty sweet.
Scott_lb 06-10-07, 07:09 PM tkole - yes, God of War I will have small black vertical bars on the left and right side of the screen when running in progressive scan (and I think in standard mode as well).
If you like God of War I, just wait until you play God of War II. When doing so (on the PS3), be sure to:
1. When you pop the game in, make sure your controller is connected via a USB cable
2. Hold down the two left shoulder buttons (L1 and L2), hold down the left thumbstick (i.e., press it in and hold it), and hold the square and circle buttons.
3. The "sony computer entertainment of america" screen will show up in purple
This allows the game to run in higher resolution than regular progressive scan and also looks better than the PS3's own upscaling. You need to plug the controller in because it's tough to get the controller registered and the button combo in time.
You really think the 480p or whatever is better than the PS3's 1080p? I usually play with widescreen on, progressive off, ps3 upscaling on full, and with full RGB. I still get the mini ps2 black bars but oh well, the cut scenes look like HD to me!!!!
How does GOW1 rate compared to GOW2? Details?
Pikasauce 06-11-07, 11:24 AM They are both amazing games. Overall I would rate GOW1 slightly better than GOW2 but GOW2 is more polished and has marginally better gameplay.
perpetual 06-11-07, 08:11 PM I just started playing GOWI. I just defeated that big serpent with multiple heads. I think the game is good but not as good as I expected so far. I hope it gets more interesting as I continue playing. Maybe I was expecting too much from the game based on what everyone else is saying.
HeadRusch 06-11-07, 08:14 PM Its a 3rd person hack and slash with about a bajllion reviews on line. You probably should be going into this with your eyes open, no? :)

I haven't played God of War II yet, but I soon will. Does this really work?
Dreamaster 06-12-07, 11:39 AM I haven't played God of War II yet, but I soon will. Does this really work?
Yes, on my 50" plamsa it's very much like taking off smudged glasses when playing in the "Psuedo HD mode". I'm an xbox guy at heart but I actually bought a PS2 just for these two games. They're simply incredible.
Peace,
Dreamaster

i would assume it would since it's 480p and not 720p or 1080p

lol, im not going to believe so until i see actual picture comparisons :p ;)
Scott_lb 06-13-07, 01:49 AM dude it works. it's been posted on the net for a while now and some people got pissed because SCEA didn't post it until after the game had been out for a month or so. I'd post pictures but I don't have a digital camera.
