Do I have to use the HDMI cable in order to have standard DVD upscaling with the 1.80 update? I currently have my PS3 connected to my plasma via component cables. Is there anyway around this without buying a new cable?

Nope, no upscaling over component. DVD forum rules, so it isn't going to change in the future either.

You can get a HDMI cable pretty cheap.

Less than $3 for that one, and monoprice has good stuff, you won't be disappointed. Just ordered some more for myself yesterday.

Shipping will get you if you are only ordering one cable though. Still, less than $10 shipped for 1 of the above to my house.

Or you could go to Best Buy and buy one for $50-$100.

Thanks for the info. I just totally realized that the PS3 has an HDMI out. For some reason I thought it only had that D-Connector Out so I thought I had to get some special PS3 HDMI cable. Good thing for me I had an HDMI cable already. Thanks!!

Does the PS3 has aspect ratio control for those "full screen" 4:3  DVD's that I sometimes rent, so the image doesn't look starched or zoomed?
I would like to have a Blu-ray player and a nice upscaling DVD in the same box.

thanks in advance!

Make sure under the "DVD Upscaling" option you selected "Normal". It'll keep whatever aspect ratios your DVDs naturally have, meaning your 4:3 stay 4:3 and your widescreen stay wide.
