On Wednesday morning at 1:35 AM my wife gave birth to our first child- Sadie Paige Francis. She was 7lb 2oz, and measured 19.75" long. She has a mostly-full head of brown hair, blue eyes (when they're open), and apparently at least some of my attitude :D .

I'm amazed at the abilities of the human body, and suddenly understand why OB chose that as a specialty. So please let me say thank you for the work you do, have done, and for those in this world like you......to me anyway, sudenly the world is a slightly better place because people like you are in it (and the nursing staff we had was amazing!).

Friends with children have always tried to explain to me how things change, but I could never quite "get it"- I do now, suddenly everything else in my life has become secondary- nothing is quite as important as it used to be. Things that I would have efforted straight-away one week ago, can now wait another day.

Gentlemen (and ladies for those who might lurk), I get it now- I understand that the work involved is worth it, and that the hours suck- but you don't care....and really there's no pay to speak-of; in fact this will cost you money, but you wouldn't trade it for the world.

THIS IS SOOOO MUCH BETTER THAN AV GEAR!!!!!!!

thanks for indulging me, attatched is a picture from the hospital.

Dan, congratulations. There is nothinng/nothing like having kids. Enjoy changing diapers, taking them in the public washrooms, and being up all night. Its worth it!!!@@ Won't be long and the wife will be complaining - probably legitimately - that you're spending too much time in your audio and/or home theater room. How do I know? I've been there.

Seriously, you are one very lucky dude who now will enjoy the best pleasures of life. Mazel Tov.

Dan,

Congratulations on your new child. My wife and I have a 27 month old girl and life certainly does change for the better so those infant moments are fresh in my mind.

Again, congratulations!

Congratulations Dan, you sound excited.

But why do you think look upon it as work? Wasn't it fun?

Nevermind, I thought you were talking about something else ;) :D.

When I held my first it took just a few seconds to realize something that can not be explained. Yes , things have changed and you will know love to a level that can only be for your children. Congratulations Dan ! Hey and I'm not even drinking. :D

Dizz...I remember the day all too well getting those twins of yours delivered and the look and expression on your face. It is something that you can only describe when you experience it. The fun I have had over the past 34 years delivering all of those babies was even more of an experience. As you know I passed the baton in February but it brings a smile to my face reading the posts in this thread. It proves to me that even all you "objectivists" know something about subjectivism... ;)

Hehehe. You would love my wife and I... We used mid-wives instead of doctors for all three of our children's births, and we had them in birthing centers instead of hospitals. ;)

Congratulations on the little girl! :)

I can tell you so many horror stories about situations such as this ( midwives and birthing centers). They still give me goose bumps

I've got a few horror stories as well, about hospitals, multiple births, "professionals" with impatience, labor interfering with pre-scheduled tee times, etc. I get goosebumps thinking about those stories, so I know exactly how you feel. ;)

Just remember that the "goal" for all obstetrical care is "healthy mother...healthy baby"

Just remember that the "goal" for all obstetrical care is "healthy mother...healthy baby"

I wish everyone made it their "goal" not just you, unfortunately, not everyone makes their hippocratic oath the priority (that or they confuse what is best for the mother and baby with what is most convenient for them). Interestingly enough, the goal of midwifery and birthing centers is "healthy mother...healthy baby" as well, except they seek to do so in the least obstructive way possible, letting the mother do whatever she needs to to give birth as naturally and comfortably as possible. In our case the birthing center was affiliated with a hopsital and was right across the street in case of emergencies.

We saw one of the hospital horror stories with my wife's sister, who was heavily medicated to the point of stopping labor (the doctor actually gave her something to stop her labor because she had another, I guess more important patient giving birth at the same time). Then my sister-in-law couldn't get labor going fully again and sat in labor for hours and hours and hours, at which point the doctor became impatient and decided it was more convenient to give her a c-section (cut her open, but you know that...). I offered to foot the bill if she decided to pursue a lawsuit since I got to see much of this happening from outside her room...

But this is a happy day, not a time for debating the merits of different birthing approaches, so lets change the topic back to congratulations.

Congrats again on the beautiful baby girl!!!

WOW,

Thanks for all the responses! Obviously, I've been a little busy the past few days, so I haven't been watching the thread as closely as normal ( I have a feeling that is going to become pretty normal for me ).

Dennis;
'funny how I was thinking the same thing.....

Again, thank you so very much for the congratulations, I'm sure I'll be contacting some of you for advise as time goes on- and I'm very glad that I'm part of a place like this to share this kind of joyous occasion.

most sincerely,
Dan
