Thanks sivadselim 06-09-07, 02:40 PM Which one has better sound for DVD-A and SACD ? Not sure which one has "better sound". Probably not much difference. What you should be asking, is "which one has better bass-management and time-management capabilities?". jim.bennett 06-10-07, 01:59 PM Well I will ask then, which one does? locomo 06-10-07, 11:58 PM Not sure which one has "better sound". Probably not much difference. What you should be asking, is "which one has better bass-management and time-management capabilities?". Yeah, I should have been more specific. Which one sounds better out of the 5.1 analog out? The Oppo has minimal bass and time management. You can set speakers to large or small, crossover is then fixed at (I think) 80 hz. Center and surround can NOT be closer than the mains(stupid bug maybe fixed.) Distance is based with main speakers as the reference point. Yamaha can set xover from 60 to 120 hz in 20 hz increments with 3 different slopes. Distances are based on listening position. Unfortunately, on the Yamaha, that's just for SACD. There is no BM for DVD-A. Oppo, fairly reliable, Yamaha, lucky if it's reliable. I was just wondering if anyone has actually listened to both of these players. mtrot 06-24-07, 10:03 PM Yes, I would like some responses, as I am looking to purchase the best audio quality universal player I can now. I also would be using the 5.1 analog outputs, but with no sub. So, I don't really care about the bass crossovers, at least until I ever get a sub. Chris Gerhard 07-26-07, 01:53 PM I have both of these players now. I can't tell a preference for audio although the DVD-S1500 SACD direct mode should mean there is no DSD>PCM conversion, which isn't possible with the Oppo DV970H. I would say buy the Oppo, unless the handling of SACD is the key issue. I can't tell that it matters personally, but I accept a direct DSD>analog conversion has to be better than DSD>PCM>analog. The Yamaha DVD-S1500 does require a DSD>PCM conversion if using the player's delay/time management abilities but I think that is a requirement with any player. Both sound like good budget players and the DVD-S1500 is available at very affordable prices refurbished now. I would buy the Oppo DV-980H over either player now if price isn't a concern. Chris celticpride 08-23-07, 05:40 PM I have the oppo 970 and it sounds awesome with my oppo 805 reeiver! when i get me a blu-ray or hd dvd player i'll only use my oppo for music sacd,dd-a ,and cd's despite the great job it does upconverting dvd's. thehun 08-23-07, 05:50 PM Which one has better sound for DVD-A and SACD ? If you must use the analog connections, then you might be better off with the Yamaha. sivadselim 08-23-07, 06:23 PM I also would be using the 5.1 analog outputs, but with no sub. So, I don't really care about the bass crossovers, at least until I ever get a sub.Yes, you do care. Do you realize that ALL multichannel players will NOT re-route the LFE channel properly to the front channels when they're set up as having NO SUB? The LFE channel is dropped altogether when the player is set up as having NO SUB. mtrot 08-23-07, 06:59 PM Yes, you do care. Do you realize that ALL multichannel players will NOT re-route the LFE channel properly to the front channels when they're set up as having NO SUB? The LFE channel is dropped altogether when the player is set up as having NO SUB. Yes, aware of that. Many DVD-A have a high-rez stereo option that I can listen to. My only SACD has stereo as well. I don't have a bunch of either so far, so no, I don't really care about the LFE re-direct right now. I do plan to get a sub someday, though. |
