Anyone else in here own Carver Amazings? Anyone used to own them and move onto another speaker? I'm curious what people would move onto next after Amazings.

Saw some down here recently for about $550 on CL,IIRC, just don't know enough about the different models yet...very tempted, but am SDA'd up the ass at the moment...might be my next step for that price. :)

Back in the day, the speaker that was typically the upgrade to that was the Apogee, even though they are pretty different in design and sound, maybe because they just looked so darned similar. Many seemed to think the Apogee was a generally better speaker in terms of detail and openess, but it certainly didn't have the bass performance of the Carvers.

Yes, I have the Amazings. I bought them new in 1992. I am about to rewire the woofers with 12 gauge wire. I feel they are a little weak in the low end. Also looking to add a JBL 2245H sub.

I would think the Legacy Focus would be a good replacement if you have a large room as I do. However, they are three times the Platinums original price.

$550 for Amazings is an insane deal. I'm so glad I ditched my SDAs for the Amazings.

Thats odd you mention the Legacy's. Not necessarily the Focus', but something from the Legacy lineup is probably what I would be most willing to take a chance on replacing the Amazings at some point. They are #1 on my list for want to hear/own.

Better late then never.

Old thread but I'll try and revive.

Owned Silvers then the Plat's since waaaaaaaaay back.

I get the itch to change every now and then but never hear anything better (at least that I don't have to take another mortgage out for).

Although I am thinking of moving my ALIII's to mains with a sub. I just prefer the imaging of the ALIII's in my room.

No need to apologize. Amazings are far from the perfect speaker. I know my wife hates the way they look. They're kept way back in a less traveled part of the house.

I someday too would like to hear some Maggies.

Came across this thread today. I have been an AL111 owner since 1995. I have upgraded everything else in the system but the speakers are another story. I would love to hear from other owners of this model with the 3 trim controls on the rear. I have played with these for years but would like to hear from others about their optimum settings.

Just noticed this thread.
I have one of the last pairs of black Amazing Platinum IV's.
I use them in my 2 channel music system.
Not suitable in a 5.1 home theater room.

I'd have to disagree with you on that. I've got Plats for main left and right and ALIII's for rear surrounds. No sub needed w/amazings.

As long as a quality center is used that doesn't applya a pronounced sonic character of it's own, it's no problem for movies. Music I stay 2 channel.

I've got a pair of the ALIII+ (the ones with the controls on back). I found I preferred them with the mids and highs dialed back just a bit.

A set of the B&G Radia 520i, plus a pair of decent subwoofers has a resemblance to the Amazings' sound, probably because of the similar pedigrees of their ribbons. They look one hell of a lot better, though.

I wonder if the new small Sunfire # CRM-2 might be used as a center channel?

I owned a pair for 10 years but sold them in 2002 before I moved half way across the country. They were the original series with the 2 30" ribbons that had been updated to 60" ribbons and new crossovers. I picked them up in the fall of 2002 for only $800 and the seller even threw in the old 30" ribbons, crossovers and boxes. I've got a pair of B&W 802 series 3's now. I found them dirt cheap and bought them thinking I would turn around and sell them for a quick profit. instead they turned into my main speakers. I would have loved to keep the Carver's but they were just too damn big to move easily.

I have had my Carvers for almost 15 years. I love them and use them with a B-G center channel I picked up for 169 dollars years ago. No matter how long I listen to them, I still enjoy the clarity and sound of the Carvers. I guess I should look and see if they need any changes, but so far I have enjoyed every minute.

I would only upgrade if I went into a bigger room . The only problem with runnning them is they are a demanding load. My old Onkyo 70 Pro would have the lights dim on the front panel and eventually shut down if I ran them real loud. For loud listening I used to put a table fan on top of the Onyo to blast air into it.

My Denon also had problems until I picked up a B-K 150 Watt per channel power amp and have had no problems since then.

Maybe it is just me, but almost every other speaker I listen to sounds too "boxy" where you know where the sound is coming from. I once heard Maggies in a dealer and found that I really prefer the planar type of sound.

Only problem I have with the Carvers is that their size limited the width of my screen choices in my room.

Too bad Apogee is also gone. Does anybody make full-range ribbon speakers anymore? Do Martin-Logans have a similar sound? What about dynamic/ribbon hybrids (eg Dali)?

One of the few spkrs I'd consider as a replacement for my Plats. Currently have their center speaker and it's great.

I have a buddy who has the ALIII version 1, pretty nice sounding VERY power hungry, they really don't lack without a sub
