I want to at least physically see (and hear the fan noise of) the new crop of pj's before I buy.

I did demo an RS-1, but I would also like to see the Panny AE1000, the Pearl/Ruby, the Optima HD81 and the Epson 1080.

Any help for where to go to see properly set-up pj's in New York City area? Last time I went to the Sony Store, the had a Cinenza only....

thanks

I know it's only 10am here, but i am wondering if the lack of responses means that i am correct: it is surprising hard to see these things!

Looks like Nadal may win in 3 sets, so i will ready to go shopping soon!

Robster when was the last time you where in the Sony store? I was there about a week ago and they had Ruby setup and playing. It's in the same space where they had the Qualia 004 set up. It's in the back in a sperate room toward your left. It's projecting onto a Stewart 120 inch screen. The times I've visited the store it's been on.

we have better....internet search engines too!

ny city is blessed with super high end (think, Digital Projection, Inc) on the one hand...and gray market/brown box places that will "get it for you cheaper," on the other hand.

in between, we have mid-fi stores selling 3 year old mustang chip dlp's for the "reduced" price of $7,999.

so as absurd as it sounds....it's not that easy!

p.s....;sorry for the early give up on Federer

actually, Rafael...my bad.

i DID see the Ruby, but wanted to see the Pearl. I am particularly concerned with fan noise, in addition to the normal pq issues.

I also want to keep the price down, given the pace of improvements in this range of pj's.

any other suggestions Rafael.??

oh...and for you: i still want Nadal to win!!! :D :D :D

Believe it or not there are not to many places in NY City really doing any quality demo's of projectors. That is why not many peope reply with places to go to. If there were it would be easy to reply and say go to "such and such". I 've tried the yellow pages, internet for years with not much luck. I've gone to places like Harvey's but the people there scare me. In the years that I have been into this "hobby" it seems the best source of demo's have been the occasionaly shoot-out or demo in some other members home.

here's my progress so far:

6th Avenue Electronics in West Long Branch, NJ: Mits 5000

Sony Store 55th and Madison, New York City: Pearl and Ruby

Accent on Music Mount Kisco NY: RS-1

Planet Appliance Stamford, CT: Epson 1080 (pro) and HD-1 (??...the RS-1 clone).

I would love to attend a shootout!!

I live in Manhattan and you'd be hard pressed to find any place that has a pj plugged in, let alone a well set-up display.

Recently, I found a couple of stores attempting to get into the HT business.

Adorama- 18th between 5th and 6th- They set up a separate HT room filled with plasmas and lcds in the building next door to the store. Nice people- I went there and the installer set up a BR player running component into a Panny 1000. I told the guy it would down convert the signal and he broke out a 35' hdmi cable. We set up a Panny 100 as well as the 1000 and threw on Phantom of the Opera. The lighting made it unimpressive and the screen was low to no gain if memory serves me.

Datavision- 39th and 5th. This computer superstore has always felt a little sleazy to me but I did buy an Olive Musica there without trouble and their reputation is better than one might think at first glance. They renovated their upstairs and have a dedicated theater room. They carry a handful of projectors and have a Marantz 11s1 set up in the theater room but the room appears off limits. No one knows much about pjs there although they would gladly run a demo but I would call in advance. They could likely do a Ruby demo as they have one on display and possibly the HD-81. Optoma actually demo'd the HD-81LV in this store as part of their press release.

And, the unusual suspects:

Harvey's- I have been to the two stores in Manhattan and, in my experience, their ignorance is matched only by their arrogance. I made three product inquiries with three different salespeople over time. After passing out cards and taking all my contact information, I did not get a return call regarding items that were said to be in stock. At last turn, a Marantz VP8600 was running bu they could not get it to work. They mentioned they may be carrying the Ruby but I have yet to find anyone in NYC who is reliable. Paul Nye of the Bridgewater, NJ store ended up selling me a Firehawk G2 100" screen for 1k and was enthusiastic about pjs although he is a Runco advocate. He would know what they will and won't carry.

Park Avenue Audio- 29th and Park- A high end place with commensurate attitude. They were an Epson dealer though, first touting the Epson's RPTVs and then the pjs. They may have an Epson demo as they tried to sell an Epson 500 some six months for what the guy told me was a "crazy low price." He wanted 3k for it. I told him the 500 was replaced by the 800 and then the 810 which could be had for 2k. He told me "they're not the same at all." I responded with facts and he got annoyed, and cracked wise under his breath. I called him a name and suggested we take it outside. He declined and our relationship has reached a stalemate; detente even.

B and H- They have a dozen or so pjs on display in a fully lit area with about an 8' throw on a wall. The Epson can be found there.

Stereo Exchange- On lower Broadway. They carried the Ruby but you'd have to call to see if they have one set up.

Cosmophonic- 84th and 1st- They've been around for thirty years. Nice people in the store but they don't know much about PJs either. Still, they have a dedicated theater room and said they were getting a few 1080 pjs in the coming weeks. This was a month or so ago. Currently, they had a nearly set up Marantz, one of the 720s nearly set up. The place is a bit anachronistic with first gen plasmas and older audio equipment laying around. They do a fair amount of repair.

A fairly bleek picture on the isle of Manhattan in my experience. Even the higher end stores carry primarily Runcos (Sound by Singer, Stereo Exchange) although Park Avenue Audio has Sim2's on demo. Still, my "friend" there said he would not recommend the Sim2 and favored the Meridian although they did not carry it. He said he could get it though if I wanted to email him. After this exchange our Epson chat ensued. Enough of my diatribe.

If anyone knows of a Manhattan store worth a look, I'd be down to know as well.

Cheers,

Dino

It's very difficult to find a demo in NYC. The Best Buy in Westbury Long Island has Sony pearl set up in the Magnolia section of the store.
Maybe we should arrange a home theater projector shootout in NYC. If anyone has a home theater big enough to hold everyone and a setup that allows for swapping out projectors easily.

If you guys are willing to make a day trip to Rochester, Jason would be happy to demo any one of several high-end projectors AVS sells under excellent conditions.

The distance from Rochester to NYC is greater than the distance from NYC to Washington DC. The roads are worse too.

I would also add 6ave electronics in Nassau County.

They have and RS1, a Sharp 20k and a few others set up in pretty good conditions.
