The original and rarest Playstation model # SCPH-1001 are selling on ebay for thousands of dollars to Audiophiles.

I have had one since launch day and never realized the CD audio was this amazing.. never thought about hooking it up to my HT

not sure if you actually checked ebay but only 1 has "sold" for more than $120 in the past week, about twenty have sold for between $50 and $100, highest open bid is $75. Looking at the one auction that went for $4000 I'm going to have to say it won't go through, the buyer has a 0 rating so it was probably fake bid to either pump up the prices on other auctions or just to have a little fun by makeing an outrageous bid.

But it is news worthy that the PS1 should be considered a seudo high end audio piece. I have a broken scph1001 and am now considering an attemp at resurecting it for

I heard the original PS1 had decent audio processing capabilities but I doubt it's in the thousands of dollars range good.

These aren't rare at all. There are plenty of them out there. Plus if you want to talk about what's rare, you would have to at least say it's the SCPH-1000 model which came out before it and was available for a lot less time than the SCPH-1001.

That's crazy. I guess if some audiophiles will pay $2000 for a power cord then some might pay $4000 for a PS1.

According to Gary Krakow at MSNBC, Sony's humble PS1 has a hidden power. Brought to bear on CD-playing alone, specific revisions of the old console are revealed as digital audio powerhouses, offering "terrific" quality competitive with top o' the line Sony SACD machines.

But only if you let it warm up for 3 days:

"Michael had a warning for me: "Plug in the units — turn ‘em on — and don’t turn them off." It seems the PlayStations sound best when left on all the time. Michael was right. You shouldn’t even listen for the first three days. Both units need every second of the break-in period."

EDIT:
Not to get off topic but this is just too funny - $500 replacement volume knob (http://www.referenceaudiomods.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=NOB_C37_C&Category_Code=VOLUME&Product_Count=2)

If you don't feel like reading up on the above websites it tells you that this model of the ps1 is in the same audio league as a $6,000 stereo!

What kind of knob would pay that much for a knob?

I have one of those crappy ps1's in my garage. Lens is crap(used it sideways because of it) and something broke off the mobo(user fault lol). I just save it because its nice to have, just for the memories.

I thought this was a bit of a hoax that had something to do with somebody extensively modding a PS1 so that it WOULD sound good. I can't remember. I've heard of the story before, though.

We had to play ours upside down so the lens would fall in place.
