Hello everyone!

This is my first post here, and I'm hoping to get some good advice and ideas.

My brothers and I live together in an apartment with an open, 2-story living room. We recently upgraded to a 46" Samsung LN-4661T LCD (which is very nice, by the way), and now we're looking for some audio advice.

Our current setup involves running a 5.1 sound system through some rather small (and cheap speakers) with a Sony receiver. We're all pretty good with technical stuff, but none of us are true "audio" guys I guess you can say we have 'moderate' audio knowledge. We're looking to upgrade our center and front left/right speakers, we're just not really sure what would work best for us. Currently, our living room area is 2-stories tall, which I imagine doesn't help with acoustics at all. There's a pretty bad echo when you clap your hands in the center of the room.

The only thing is that we're not going to be in this apartment forever, so we're not looking for a very 'expensive' way to deal with the open area, just something to get us by, or possibly something we'll be able to take with us when we leave. We're more interested in getting decent speakers to work with our setup, and possibly a better A/V Receiver. I was thinking that floor speakers for the L/R speakers would work nicely, and a 'flat' center speaker to fit in front of the TV, but not to be so tall as to block the front of the TV. Are there any major advantages/disadvantages to having smaller/larger speakers?

I know asking for recommendations will get several completely responses, but any input would really help.

Also, we think we have the best layout for our furniture/room, but any advice people may have regarding that aspect would also be helpful. I realize most of this post is about audio, but if there's anything that doesn't have to do with the actual speakers to help with sound, we'd very much appreciate it.

Thanks everyone!
