View Full Version : Mounting LCD with 3M Command Strips?

Not sure this is possible and I don't really know how to test it without losing a tv, but I thought I'd pose the question.

Here's my deal. I live in an apartment, so I can't really be drilling holes in my wall, well, I guess I could, but that would be a lot of fixing later. That said I have the perfect spot at the foot of my bed to mount a 20"-23" LCD. I would ideally like to be able to have this on an arm, so I could swivel it to face my desk as well.

I haven't purchased a tv yet, so a lot of things will depend on that, but here is what I was thinking:

1. Get a tv that is vesa mount compatible (20"-23")
2. Get a vesa mount that does what I want and mount it to a board.
3. Get many Large 3M command strips and put these to the other side of the board.
4. Mount the board to the wall with the 3M strips.
5. Attach the TV and hope it doesn't fall.

Is this even something I should try out or is it a disaster in the making?
I've mounted speakers with single large 3m hooks and have had no problems with that.
The only thing I really worry about is using a mount with an arm. If I pull out the tv, it will create more stress on the 3m strips.

Anyone have any other ideas how I could do this without damaging my walls?

Thanks.

Sticking something to the wall would be far more damaging (when it peels off) then drilling 4 - 8 holes (into studs).

If done right, you can always remove the wall mount and just patch up the small holes..

These are the kind of strips that peel off without damaging the walls. I have used them all over the apartment in numerous applications and have never had a problem with them damaging the walls.

Plus, I don't think there are any studs in the area I would like to install it, is this a huge problem for a small tv?

but that would be a lot of fixing later

It takes 5 minutes for a complete newb to fill in a couple screw holes. Hell, you could use toothpaste if you didn't feel like driving to Home Depot! A splash of paint later and you will be done, it will be less time than the sticky strips, which don't hold too well, especially not when the weight is far out on an arm (leverage anyone?).

As far as not having studs, that's another issue. If that's definitely the case (you should be sure first) you can use (4) quarter inch toggle bolts.

I would be deathly afraid of hanging a TV on my wall using 3M Command strips.

I agree with everyone that says screw it in and patch the holes later.

i wouldnt trust those 3M Command strips for anything, espescially my tv bieng one my prized possessions. if your not familiar with screwing drilling that sort of handy man stuff you can do some research online or even go to homedepot and ask someone there or read one of thier DIY books. its a peice of cake man and patching those holes wil take no time at all. good luck
