View Full Version : John Mayer
WestCoastD 06-10-07, 04:48 PM Just wondering if John Mayer's latest recording smash hit album "Continuum" will be, or has been, re-released on hi-resolution format (SACD or DVD-A)?
I have "Heavier Things" SACD, it's a great recording and excellent multi-channel mix. I guess this is his only hi-resolution release?
I saw him last night at the HollyWood Bowl (Los Angeles), the "Continuum" Tour is one of the best show's this concert season. I truly believe he is one of our best talents in existence currently, and he's just becoming known to a wider audience. His music was so well, almost perfectly, arranged last night. Every song was engaging. Great vocalist/composer and guitarist!

No, Continuum has not been released in hi-rez, and I am sure it won't be. And Heavier Things is not his only hi-rez release. Room For Squares came out as a hybrid SACD release after Heavier Things. While neither of them are stellar SACD's, I like the album, sonics, and surround mix of RFS better than Heavier Things.

Savageone79 06-11-07, 10:24 PM I found the surround mixes and sound quality of RFS and Heavier Things to be among the bottom of my sacd collection.
WestCoastD 06-11-07, 11:06 PM I think the "Heavier Things" mix is very good. I have quite a collection of SACD's and DVD-A's so I can distinguish a decent mix from a very good mix.
Nathan_R 06-12-07, 09:26 AM Interesting feedback. I'm a huge John Mayer dork, so I love both of the SACD mixes immensely. It never occurred to me that they are of inferior quality. I suppose that's what fandom does to us at times.

Savageone79 06-13-07, 11:17 PM I am a fan myself but and by all means enjoy the mix if you do :) I just know from my ears the mix is not much more than reverb in the rears (Try playing only the rears and you will see what I mean) If you do a search on the web for discussion on the album and the sacd you will find that many people find the quality of the recording to be lackluster.. not so much the fault of sacd but more the fault of the master recording. The producer heavily compresses the volume levels in the recording leading to a very "hot" sound which strips a lot of the nuances from the recordings.. this carries over to the sacd as well. Anyway not trying to rain on anyone's parade just putting my 2cents in :)
WestCoastD 06-14-07, 01:00 AM The producer heavily compresses the volume levels in the recording leading to a very "hot" sound which strips a lot of the nuances from the recordingsyou're definitely right there, I immediately noticed how "powerful" this recording is. And I knew it was related to the original recording levels. I always have to set my master volume to a "safe" level before playing this disc.
Otherwise, I feel the SACD tracks are mostly well-balanced and clean. Many tracks place his guitar right in my room, and the vocals come across mostly refined.
alexg75 06-14-07, 01:40 AM Add me to the John Mayer Fan List! I'm a HUGE fan as well.
The RFS & HT albums are also available as DUALDISCS.I have the SA-CD version of HT and the DualDisc of HT.The cool thing about the DualDisc version of RFS is that it has some really cool extra's including a long documentary on the making of the album. There is a Dolby 5.1 mix for standard DVD players and a hi-res track for DVD-A players.
As far as the multi-channel mixes go,they are pretty good and certainly an improvement over the CD's but they are overly compressed and a bit flat sounding.
Too bad that CONTINUUM isn't available in 5.1 because it would be great,as the CD is one of the best sounding discs I've heard in a while--light on the compression and very warm sounding.
My favorite JM CD is the Trio Record,Great Stuff.
What do you guys think?

What do you guys think?exactly how I feel (about Continuum disc that is), it would make for a great multichannel (hi-rez) mix. I'm hoping we'll see one format or another later this year, especially being as big is he is right now. The Continuum tour marks his major pop "debut". As I mentioned above this tour is absolutely excellent! Every song is performed beautifully.
Have'nt heard the "Trio" stuff yet, but I plan to.
Nachosgrande 06-20-07, 04:15 PM JMT stands apart from anything else he has released. Great stuff. Not too thrilled about the Continuum mix...
Just wondering if anyone has listened to the Room For Squares Hybrid SACD and if it was any good?
Thanks in advance.
WestCoastD 10-17-07, 02:12 AM Just wondering if anyone has listened to the Room For Squares Hybrid SACD and if it was any good?will have to look out for that one, never heard it myself.
Eric Goldman 10-17-07, 03:56 PM I too love the Continuum CD....Have been looking for SACD/ DVD-A, but truly can't wait for the tour DVD (multi-channel obviously!). Any information as to whether this may be a happening thing?

It is far better than the Dolby 5.1 mix on the DualDisc release.
I find the fidelity on Heavier Things to be better, but neither or them are particularly stellar.
I certainly don't regret buying them as they are both better than the CD's, but I would have to say Heavier Things finds its way into my SACD player more often that RFS.
In fact other than Bigger Than My Body I'm overall very fond of the fidelity of Heavier Things, that one track just seems to be off though; harsh woudl be a better word. From that point on the sonics are just fine.

There is no DVD-A mix on the DualDisc for Room For Squares. The SACD is a huge improvement over the DualDisc.

I am not a John Mayer fan but, I trust my ears and like what I heard:)
My first and ever JM redbook album was Continuum enjoyed it very much....

I can't believe John Mayer has time to compose and tour when he's steeped in all that premium trim as of late!

There is always time for premium trim:D, that's the point of being a musician;)

I know I am over a year late on this post. I picked up the dual disk of HT at BB, harsh is the word. I was more excited about finding multi-channel audio at a big box store than the music itself. I do have a man-crush on the guitar of his, but this DD mix is just terrible. I listen in stereo instead.
gigaguy 05-06-08, 12:42 PM Watch out Brad, Angelina may be next.
after Aniston and Simpson, and that Jennifer who he wrote Wonderland about.
I'm biased against him cause I read he never listened to the Beatles. I guess I'm shallow or stupid.

I heard this as well and it's Jennifer Love Hewitt who certainly falls in the premium trim category. However, wiki says he wrote the song before they dated so it's not true. Regardless, he's a great guitar player but his lyrics need a bit less cheese.
gigaguy 05-06-08, 02:56 PM Just cause he sang about her body doesn't mean it was from experience.
These girls must really like his talent too. but he's a serialdater.
AALLOCA 05-06-08, 03:04 PM As a big fan from JM trio album on, I think he is a breathe of fresh air.
Never really liked his DMB like acoustic pop fluff stuff.
He has found his groove to say the least in the last few years/
Continuum is a fantastic album, and sonically very good sounding IMO.
The thing you have to remember about John is this, even is you hate his music, image, girlfriend, etc... he is one of the best guitarists on the planet right now, which means he is a better musician than so-so in whatever Nicklecrack faux rock band.
I saw him live last year, and am going again.
Live music is so important in today's backing track, lip sync, hook only, low substance music environment.
I hope he does a project in high resolution surround soon.
The sky is the limit for this guy.

I'm with you on everything except your very off base DMB comparison. DMB is far from a pop band, and Tim Reynolds who basically plays guitar on every DMB album could wipe the floor with Mayer. He does however look like a troll and is nowhere near the premium trim level.
AALLOCA 05-06-08, 04:14 PM Chicago,
Without getting into a pissing match.
Tim Reynolds is very gifted on guitar from the stuff I have heard.
I am slightly biased against DMB since I think they are over rated compared to Phish in their prime and I think they are talented enough to step outside of their boundaries/format that is getting stale.
I do think songs like Two Step are masterpieces, but again let's hear an album that slightly pushes their comfort zone.
But never the less Mayer is a musical treat.
ChicagoTC 05-06-08, 05:12 PM No pissing match at all. DMB is definitely more "pop" then Phish. I think commercial success did get to them a bit. Before these crowded streets is a fantastic album, unfortunately their last good one with the exception of the unreleased lillywhite sessions.
There new stuff is going to be good from what I've heard and Tim Reynolds is joining them on tour again, so hopefully this is a turn for the better.
Sorry for hijack :)
WestCoastD 05-19-08, 01:33 AM Live music is so important.........The sky is the limit for this guyexactly, this guy is a great composer/guitar player, one of the best musicians on the scene right now.

John Mayer is a prodigy and always was. His composition skills are way to sophisticated to be "in" today. Very few people in any audience these days can understand the complexity of his composition skills. Sad, but true.
I did include a bit of "City Love" on my public demo at www.penteosurround.com.
For what its worth he has a blu ray concert disk coming out in july...

I will definitely be picking that up, thank you.
WestCoastD 05-20-08, 12:47 PM Cool!, I'm sure it will be good if it reflects his recent "Continuum" tour.

100% agreed. I haven't seen Tim onstage since my first DMB show in 1998, now at my 34th show in Toronto this year I'll see him again.
With Tim Reynolds in the studio for the first time since BTCS, I'm sure it will be a welcome surprise compared to the last two offerings.
Hopefully we'll hear a few more performances of Last Stop and Dreaming Tree on this tour with Timmy back in the mix.
WestCoastD 05-20-08, 03:07 PM It's in three parts. Recorded on December 8, 2007 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angelesthis is gonna be killer! I remember this show, although I did'nt go. This concert was part of the first of a hand-full of first performances for the new Nokia Theater (across from Staples Center). The Nokia Theater represents the state-of-the-art in modern theater/stage design for the ultimate "live" concert experience. Has all the latest in media technology for "live' broadcasts. That's why the recent Grammy Awards show was broadcasted from there, as well as tonight's American Idol final show (which I can care less about). Consequently I expect this new BD title mix should be some of the best to come- period.
