View Full Version : PS3/Onkyo 605 issue
delusive1 06-10-07, 04:53 PM Only 3 ch are working. Front left and right and the sub when the PS3 is connected to the 605 via HDMI. Playing Blu Ray movies works well all channels work. I have a 5.1 set up. But for games, movie downloads, and navigating on the XMB only 3 ch are heard. I do have 1.8 firmware.....
stevesns69 06-10-07, 05:03 PM Do you have the audio set to bitstream or PCM? I think if use PCM it just gives you 2 channels with sub on games, but on a Blu-ray PCM will give you lossless 5.1. I'm still waiting for my Onkyo 875, so I can't speak from experience with an HDMI 1.3 receiver yet. My current receiver does however work for movies and games when set to bitstream and shows up 5.1 dolby digital (only up to 640kbps) or dts. Good luck.
edit: I just checked the HDMI setup for audio and you can manually check each audio codec you want. Maybe this is where the problem is?
michael000 06-10-07, 05:06 PM The same thing happened with my Denon AVR-887. Pretty sure you're only going to get 5.1 output if the actual source is 5.1 unless you matrix it or add some PLIIx effect. Well that's what i had to do when watching trailers or listening to MP3s since my PS3 was outputting PCM. No clue if it's different if you switch to bitstream.
delusive1 06-10-07, 05:37 PM Thats an inconvenient. You have to go back and forth to set auido options....
I'll try it and report back..thanks guys!
delusive1 06-10-07, 05:46 PM Update..nothing...still only 3 channels are working.
I have tried to switch on the console PCM to Bitsteam. Same results. So this is a PS3 issue or a Onkyo issue. its really hard to pin point it at this point.
DblHelix 06-10-07, 07:51 PM Have you gone into the HDMI audio settings and changed it from auto to manual and clicked on all of the PCM, DD and DTS buttons? If that doesn't fix it then I don't know. I have a Marantz SR7001 and I am getting 5.1 audio from games in HDMI
I'd venture a guess that it is the Onkyo. What sound field setting are you using? I have last years model 804. And I have no problem with 5.1 on all sources (those recorded in 5.1 Movie trailers are still two channel).... I typically have the Onkyo set up in "Direct" mode. or "Surround"..unless I'm listening to music then I switch it to Stereo

This is what I did and then I changed the Blu Ray player audio output to Bitstream and FINALLY my 605 was able to decode it properly.
As far as the games...I played Calling All Cars last night and it was in 5.1...sounded good. I checked out the Transformers trailer and it only played through 3 speakers.

If you still are trying to get 5.1 out of the movie trailers (as mentioned before they are recorded in 2ch) You need to go into the HDMI audio settings UNCHECK all 5.1 and 7.1 settings. Forcing the PS3 to send 2 ch for everything. The 605 can then apply Dolby PLII to that 2ch signal and matrix 5.1 for you.
delusive1 06-12-07, 01:50 AM Okay I now understand that downloaded movie trailers are NOT 5.1 I can live with that. But I am still having problems. I am not getting my PS3 games to go 5.1 via HDMI. Its frustrating. How are you 605 owners getting 5.1 games to sound 5.1 instead I am just getting front 2 channels and the sub.

AWSOME!!!! Finally...the guys at Onkyo, Sony didn't lead me the right way. Thanks I can now enjoy games on 5.1 via HDMI!!!!
Great forum!

Not to rain on your parade :D But what you have now is 2Ch stereo being matrixed (tricked or faked) into 5.1 If you want true 5.1 surround sound You'll need to figure out whats up with the 605 and the PS3. Again what mode are you running your 605 in when you where having your 5.1 troubles? Direct? Surround? Stereo?
djmoose 06-13-07, 01:29 AM delusive1,
What games are you playing that aren't coming over in 5.1?
More importantly, what does/did your 605 display when you're only getting 3 channels? (before you unchecked the 5.1 settings?)
I have a 674 and it works perfectly. Resistance, Motorstorm, etc etc...all in wonderful 5.1. (not to mention Calling all Cars and Cash, guns, & Chaos)

I can confirm... I'm seeing 5.1 on my end with my PS3 and 605 as well.
delusive1 06-13-07, 02:14 AM Got it!!!! Finally 5.1 via HDMI on games!!! Thanks.
All I did was just leave the auido settings to "automatic" on the PS3.

That is funny because in order for mine to work I had to set it to manual and check all the PCM sound settings.

Like Anavrin, the only way to force the PS3 to bitstream game audio is to remove all the PCM options that I can in the 'audio settings' menu.
