I think there's been some discussion with French HD-DVD's playing English audio you can't turn off the French subtitles.

So far the big title that had this was the "Theatrical Cut for Terminator 2", but not the "Extended Cut" (that came available in the same set). Other than that, there might be a couple of other titles, but for the most part you have the option of English audio with no French subtitles.

Does anyone know if that is a Studio Canal decision to force sub titles or if it is another socialist decision by the French government to make French companies force French subtitles on English speaking movies sold to their country.

If its just Studio+ then we might be in luck here. As for T2 the Theatrical version is only being sold in France so thats why it has forced. If studio canal is planning on selling a disc outside of france (to the UK or Germany for example) they won't force subtitles.

Just wanted to add that since the original source for that information is actually "Les annees laser" french magazine, that this is definitely reliable information. I have been a subscriber for over 5 years and those guys never spilled wrong information on upcoming software or hardware releases (case in point : they were the 1st ones in the world to spill the beans on the upcoming dual Samsung player, even before any internet website).

It probably has everything to do with the conditions the companies selling them the movies set for each individual distribution deal, or so I remember reading somewhere else on this forum. Also, it could be a usability issue from the standpoint of their primary market.

Either way, I don't think it has anything to do with any sort of government conspiracy. The only conspiracies I'm worried about are Blu, not Red. :D

Terabithia will also be released on HD DVD in Spain.

Sorry, I whenever I hear about this forced subtitles (not subtitles but forced ones) it always has to do with France. I just wasn't sure if it was government controlled much like the must have English and French writings on signs laws passed about 5-10 years ago in Quebec. My disdain for their government comes from things like banning red-bull because they where going to make something similar.

No reason to be sorry, the forced subs thing annoys me as well. Unfortunately, it probably isn't limited to just Studio Canal or France. Actually, the Spanish Filmax HD DVD of Underworld: Evolution kind of has forced subs, but there is a very simple work-around posted in these forums and elsewhere.

Yeah, I almost brought up Quebec. (Disclaimer: I am not a Canadian.) They probably have more requirements for French than France does because of their situation. Bit of trivia gleaned from another thread: apparently, French-language dubs done in Quebec are popular in France...but I forget why. :p

Protectionist policies are nothing new, not limited to France, and can often be a good thing (but only when we're the ones doing it :p ). That said, I reserve my disdain for governments in general.

Which is why I support HD DVD! Because it lets us watch Hi-Def movies from anywhere in the world we want!

(See how I brought that back on topic at the last second? ;) )

They can keep 'Ghost Rider,' that movie was a waste of 2 hours of my life. Utter garbage.

Here in Germany we had huge problems with forces subs back when DVD started. Almost all local distributors were bound by licensing agreements to include forced german subs with the original language track. It came and went but France canīt seem to (or doesnīt want to) get rid of them.

That would be unfortunate if this situation became the norm for HD DVD as well. Shipping is supposed to be cheaper from amazon UK anyway. :p

I'd like to have Lord or War and Gangs of New York. I haven't seen any of those others yet
