View Full Version : How come no one bothers to mention the AMAZING audio on Underworld Evolution?
http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/2117/movieunderworldevolutiozy4.jpg
I just viewed Underworld Evolution last night with the uncompressed pcm 5.1 audio track and I have to say, HOLY CRAP!
I actually had to lower the subwoofer volume for the 1st time ever (with about 15 Blu-ray titles viewed so far) because the booming low bass was too much for my wife to handle :)
Everyone goes on and on (and deservedly so) about the Audio track on Blackhawk Down. But Underworld Evolution gets the cold shoulder it seems. No one seems to give it the proper credit for the fantastic audio track.
I actually preferred the gun shot sound effects and overal ambience on the uncompressed pcm track from Underworld Evo over Blackhawk Down's uncompressed pcm track. It's that good!
My guess is that more people talk about BHD rather than U:E because BHD is a far better movie. That said, I own both on BD and am very happy with the PQ and AQ of each. Now if only Sony would release the first Underworld. ;)

tkbryant 06-11-07, 06:11 PM I have always raved about Underworld:Evo's audio track. It's definitely one that I pull out when I wanna show people what uncompressed audio can sound like. It is loud and has tremendous surround effects. The video ain't half bad either. I agree with others in saying Sony can't release the first one fast enough.
HDgloryhog 06-11-07, 06:13 PM I had this movie recorded on my DVR for a long time. Even on the VIP 622 it was incredible.

Hey I'm one of the biggest Kate fans out there and in U:E she looks even hotter than normal but this was a disappointing sequel and certainly not in the same league as BHD movie quality wise.

same here, couldnt stop staring at Selene throughout the movie to notice anything else. that and my sony 910 hasnt shipped yet so no pcm lossless yet!

I liked U:E more than the first. I couldn't stand the first one but have grown to like it because of U:E. I mean she almost freaking drowned in the first. Is that even possible?

I love the original. It's a favorite of mine, no doubt. The sequel was rather weak IMO. That said, a friend of mine also prefers the sequel so what do I know? ;)
wildfire99 06-11-07, 06:42 PM The original Underworld on DVD has THE LOUDEST audio of any disc I've ever played. I think they just cook up the effects special-like for this series. It was seriously outrageous, but it did have a lot of wonderful visceral effects. I'm still waiting for the BD to show up, but I presume I'll be cranking the receiver down to -58 (normal movies at -42) for that one too then.
michael000 06-11-07, 06:57 PM I think the reason the release as a whole goes unmentioned so often is due to how long ago it was released. It'd be an impressive release today (AQ and PQ) so when you take into account that it was one of the earliest titles it speaks volumes on just how well done the release was.

Yep. was fun tho
CraigCooper 06-12-07, 05:32 AM I really like both. I have Evolution, now just waiting for the release of Underworld. You just can't go past Kate in tight leathers :D
gorthocar 06-12-07, 09:00 AM U:E just wasn't a story I could really get into.

Maybe not, but I could get into Kate. :)
The movie's soundtrack is certainly loud, I'll give it that. I personally don't automatically equate "loud" with "amazing". Dialogue was mixed too low, and there's very little definition of individual sounds. It's just a mass of loud, blaring noise hammering at you for 2 hours.
ChrisBeveridge 06-12-07, 12:02 PM The title got caught up under the general wave of negativity surrounding most of the early releases unfortunately.

Not to mention, most didnt have the knows or hows to get PCM back then.... I'll have to check it out again.
I see you fell off the wagon Chris... welcome back.
ChrisBeveridge 06-12-07, 12:59 PM Yeah, I'm back for a short bit at least, wanted to post about Freedom over in the HD DVD section. Next month I'll have 3 BD titles to talk about...

Cool... Am I allowed to call you a newbie with your low post count???? :D

Dialog was fine on my system. As well as definition of individual sounds.
Peter M. Bracke seems to agree as well...
HighDef Digest review for Underworld Evolution (http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/underworldevolution.html)
Across the entire mix, dynamic range is excellent... All channels are actively engaged throughout, with effective placement of dialogue, effects and the score in all five channels... I was also pleased that the dialogue was generally well-balanced in the mix. Discrete surround effects are also present, with even minor ambient sounds and other atmospheric details fully audible. Very nicely done.
tlreddragon 06-12-07, 08:33 PM Is it just me or is the menu audio incredibly loud too? I get irritated whenever the house shakes everytime I open up the menu.

Plenty of others prefer the original which was a better looking sd dvd than the second to boot.

Well, good for the both of you. These movies where the sound effects are 800 times louder than the dialogue and shriek in your ears every few seconds to make you think the movie is "scary" just don't do it for me. To each their own.
This disc was probably the first Blu Ray that was demo quality when it was released. However, as stated above, it got caught up with all the aweful quality releases.
briankmonkey 06-13-07, 01:58 PM audio and picture quality are great on this movie. I quite enjoyed it. I haven't watched the first but I'm sold on it already.
The first was awesome on SD-DVD as well. Sound was exceptional for standard DD.
For those who care...
IMDB is reporting an 'Untitled Underworld Prequel' (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0834001/) scheduled for 2009.
Len Wiseman (Beckinsale's husband and director for Underworld 1&2) is on board. Kate has not been cast yet.
Hope this one rocks.
