Good evening all,
I have the opportunity to purchase an HC5000 for a very reasonable price. This will be my first projector so I'm looking for some guidance.
Have there been any problems with HC5000s that I should be aware of? Looking at a couple of reviews, the unit seems to be well received.
Thanks

Dust blobs are occuring - highly suggest replacing filter that comes with the unit
If mounting to ceiling- the mounting holes are jacked up and have no center of gravity
Pro's - good color and sharpness and fantastic picture
Con's - adjustable iris and black levels
Thanks for the info. Not quite sure what you mean by the mounting holes are jacked up and no center of gravity. Would you mind explaining please.
I was reading on another thread about the dust blobs. Someone tried putting panty hose over the vent. Any problems with this?
Thanks

I was reading on another thread about the dust blobs. As far as replacing filter, do you mean replace with a new one from Mitsubishi, or replace with an after market filter? Someone tried putting panty hose over the vent. Any problems with this?
Thanks

see my post history in regards to mounting this projector and what I did to remedy the situation...

I have been using the panty hose trick and monitoring the bulb temperature/fan mode of operation for over 120 hours now with no problems or dust blobs. The picture is fantastic although I can see how the RS-1 would improve black levels. All in all for the price savings I think it is a better deal, but that really depends on how much an extra $1500 means to you.

Cherokee what is a normal fan mode? The reason I ask is because I have seen my projector go to a fan mode of 11, after about 20 minutes of use. When the fan mode gets that high I can start to hear rattling noises coming from the projector. I am thinking that the noise may be due to the fan operating but I don’t know if this is a normal fan mode or if it is higher then normal and there is something wrong with the projector. Thanks for any info you can give.

I don't know what to tell you as I don't think anything is normal per se. The fan mode would be affected by what bulb mode you were using (low, vs. bright) as well as the ambient temperature and relative humidity of the inlet air. A major factor would also be how clean your air filter is, as the projector would increase the fan speed to try and cool the bulb if the airflow had dropped due to a dirty air filter. I have my unit in a basement that is very cold, even though we shut the A/C vents. My inlet temperature is 23 deg. C with low humidity due to the A/C being on. If I recall my bulb temperature is about 67 deg. C. At this inlet temperature my unit runs at mode 0-2. I believe it will go up to mode 24 as somebody else reported. I also put the panty hose over the inlet of the stock filter within 1 hour of use, so I assume my stock filter is probably perfectly clean, although I will not actually know until I check it sometime. What I was really looking for when I added the pantyhose was any major change in bulb temperature or fan mode, which did not occur. I would say to clean your filter, let it dry and then run in low bulb mode to see if you numbers are anything like mine.

Thanks for the reply. I am under similar conditions as you. I have my projector in the basement as well. I do have it sitting on a shelf above the sitting area. I did clean the filter out and I still get the high fan mode of around 9 to 11. I recall my bulb temperature was 68 degrees. I’ll double check that later. I’m starting to think it may be because I have the projector in a shelf. When I get time I am going to try cutting some vents into the shelf to try to improve air flow to the projector. I was also thinking about removing it from the shelf and placing it on a table and watching a movie to see if the fan would still reach mode 11. Thanks again for the reply.
