View Full Version : HDR-HC3 Doesn't See Premiere's Video - with an added wrinkle!

So this is my first post here, as I never felt like I was quite up to the level of expertise that is so prevalent here on AVS Forum. I hope I don't embarass myself.

So, I have an HDR-HC3 which works very well and does exactly what I need it to do. I connect it to my Aquos with an HDMI cable and that is great, I shoot whatever I feel like shooting and so far, so good. Recently I got back into editing (used to be an editor for a brief stint, got out of it, but now I have been messing around again)

I use Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 on a dual core XP machine, and by and large I have no difficulty. The importing is seamless over firewire, the software controls the camera, never drops frames, etc. I have exported a few videos to files, and those work fine, other than the constant nightmare of finding the proper compression/size/bitrate.

Today, I tried something new though, I wanted to write back to the tape. I edited a little five minute video together, got it ready to go, and then - nothing. I hadn't set up the camera, so I went in and set it to "Auto" on HDV/DV, and I turned on the iLink recording option. My computer recognized a digital recording device, and "Export to Tape" became an option. I hit Export To Tape, and the camera started recording, on the screen my video started playing, and I let it do it's thing.

Except that the screen on my camcorder stayed blank. It was recording, it says "HDVin" on the screen, but once I finished the record I went to check and see what had recorded (assuming it recorded with a blank screen) and found that nothing had recorded. Now I don't really know what to do.

Things I have tried:
Playing with the device control menu in premiere.
Quitting premiere and booting it up again.
Rebooting the camera.
Recording just a little bit.

And so far nothing.

Here is the (exciting!) wrinkle that I mentioned in the title: I lived in Japan for a year and bought this camera there. The HC3 has no option to switch the UI language, so the whole thing is in japanese. I read a little bit of japanese and can find my way around, but I'm not one hundred percent sure everythign is set up right. My sneaking suspicion is that the camera is not set up correctly and so is not reading the video coming across the iLink - and I don't know what to do!

Any help would be extremely appreciated.

:)
