View Full Version : Crank looked like a SD DVD on my PS3
snickersbar 06-11-07, 11:43 PM I havnt calibrated my sony 40" 1080P LCD display yet, but Apocolypto looked AWESOME and had a ton of 3-D pop feel. I bought crank and it looked like an SD DVD. Everyone here says thats its rated in one of the top tiers.
Is it not a 3D effect that makes it good? I didnt look bad but it didnt look anywhere near as good as Apolocypto (I only have 4 BD movies and I wasnt expecting Terminator 1 or Reservoir Dogs to look that great since they are older).
I calibrated my TV against my Mac Mini HDMI with the built in OS X controls - I havnt heard of any BD calibration disks. I could use my Avia SD DVD calibration diska and will try tomorow.
Maybe the sharpness is set too low? That might add some pop?
zoman504 06-11-07, 11:58 PM Hmm, that is weird. I watched Crank on my sammy 46" 1080p lcd and its was siiiick, def a 3d look as you say.
Shane Martin 06-12-07, 12:02 AM Something is SERIOUSLY amiss. It looks pretty amazing on my 50" 720P Panasonic Plasma.
snickersbar 06-12-07, 12:05 AM Whats the best scene to look for this after I calibrate my system? Dont get too mad I have only had it for like 6 weeks.
kowhite 06-12-07, 12:06 AM Maybe you were having a reaction to how utterly awful the movie is, which made you incapable of appreciating the video quality.

I second that

Heh, no kidding. :) Anyway, something does sound wrong here. Crank is one of the highest-rated titles as far as picture quality is concerned. You said Apocalypto (also highly rated) looked good, so I'm baffled as to why you think Crank looks bad. Some people have said it has edge enhancement, but that's not likely to make someone think it looks like SD. Don't add sharpness; if anything, that would exaggerate the EE more.
BTW, you might want to reconsider how you calibrate. Your Mac Mini may be outputting PC (PC as in computer, not like PC vs. Mac) levels as opposed to video levels. Without getting into the technical details, you could be calibrating to a source with different ranges for black and white levels, and the result could be off when playing a movie on whatever player you have. Again though, you said Apocalypto looked great, so this is just a side suggestion that may not be the reason you're disappointed with Crank. Unless you're sure it's set to output video levels instead of PC levels, don't use a computer to calibrate (unless it's for that source of course).

snickersbar 06-12-07, 01:51 AM Yea the movie was pretty bad- I got it as a blind buy because it was high on the tier list and because I lOVED the transporter movies with him in it.
But in retrospect I didnt calibrate the screen for the PS3 as its on a different HDMI input and the screen has separate calibrations per input so I only really did the Mini HDMI I guess.
shadowrage 06-12-07, 02:03 AM The movie itself was horrible.
It's like 20 minutes long, super fast, loud, and amy smart shows a nipple.
Not to mention it's hilarious. 'Google Earth' rofl.
If you look at from the perspective of being on crank it's even better.
What do people really expect from a movie called crank.
That's why Attack of the Clones was better than the Phantom Menace.
PM is a badass title. ATOC sounds silly you expect alot less.
But yeah Crank isn't worth the $30 or so dollars it costs. Awesom PQ.
KyaDawn 06-12-07, 02:09 AM Crank has a lot of edge enhancement. That said, it looks razor sharp on my set-up, sometimes in a very artificial way (note Jason's facial hair in his close-ups during the first driving scenes). But it shouldn't in any way look like a SD DVD.
HandlesFTW 06-12-07, 03:22 AM Crank looked 3d on my 1080p 46 incher
I loved the movie, and best live action PQ on blu-ray (havent watch POTC 2 yet :) )

I would rate it as one of the worst movies i've seen in a long time. The shorts looked quite good, but the movie was a huge let down. I could never buy this, no matter how good it looks and sounds.
AaronSCH 06-12-07, 08:45 AM I must have checked my brain at the door 'cause I thought "Crank" was one helluva rollercoaster ride and it is definitely one of the better high definition releases so far. I enjoyed every crazy cranked up caffeine-enduced moment.

I'm the same way. I enjoyed it for what it was. I certainly wasn't expecting Shakespeare. But, for mindless violence, and action, it was better than most of the tripe out there pretending to be action movies.
Dumb? Oh, yeah. Definitely. But, I admit to giggling a few times.
so's your face 06-12-07, 09:36 AM i enjoyed it too, but had no idea what to expect other than a fast paced popcorn film.
but it looked fantastic on my ps3...

yeah, I made the same mistake too when I first got my LCD. :D
swanlee 06-12-07, 10:20 AM It was a pretty mindless action flick, but that's all it was supposed to be, I enjoyed the movie for what it was and it looked great. I have SEEN a lot worse crappy action flicks.
HPforMe 06-12-07, 01:10 PM Great looking movie, nice soundtrack. Good popcorn flick as far as I'm concerned. The PQ is top notch as seen on my 1080p 65" DLP.
JosephShaw 06-12-07, 01:28 PM I enjoyed the movie, but I too wasn't expecting anything beyond a mindless action flick. However, the move is even better when you turn on the family friendly audio track! :D
DavidHir 06-12-07, 01:44 PM My set is an ISF'd 57" CRT RPTV with PS3 at 1080i. Crank has as much detail as I've ever seen (and maybe more). Certain scenes are just amazing - espeically the helicopter scene at the end. It definitely has EE, but being such a different kind of movie and how it was filmed, I'm not sure of the movie's intended look or how it looked at the theater.
As others have said, the disc looks amazing so I have no idea why it looked poor for you.
ChrisInCali 06-12-07, 10:47 PM Crank looked insane on my DLP and my LCD HDTV, something must be off on you TV or PS3. Check your display settings, make sure it's not playing in 480p.
lparsons21 06-13-07, 12:36 AM I loved the movie, and best live action PQ on blu-ray (havent watch POTC 2 yet :) )
I'm with you, it was hilarious! Who woulda thunk that he had so much comedy in him?
stevcha 06-13-07, 12:48 AM I have the PS3 and Crank and the movie looked awesome on my plasma. I agree the storyline isnt great but it looked really good
lilstinky 06-13-07, 10:45 AM Looked amazing on my SXRD and I actually liked the film. I usually snooze through these one action scene after another movies but this one had me paying attention.

didn't like the action much, only thing that really had my attention was amy smart.

Yeah, it started out good. I thought, "this is going to be really funny, quirky, and weird...I can see why some didn't like it, but this is awesome!" Then somewhere along the line it lost me and I ended up not liking it. Had potential.

I totally agree, Transporter 1&2 are much..much..much better.

transporter 1 will be a purchase in the near future for me, as bad as hsu chi's english was, she still looks damn good. want to wait til it's under $20 tho. transporter 2 i'm not sure about yet, maybe when i have some money to spare.

I liked Transporter 1 and Crank but hated Transporter 2. To each his own.
Neo1965 06-14-07, 12:40 AM 1. What player are you using?
2. Did you set the output resolution to 1080i on your player?
JUSTIN MELHADO 06-14-07, 01:51 AM One of the best looking so far IMO for BLURAY. Loved TRANSPORTER 1 and 2 equally and thought CRANK was even better, it had every thing you could want in a movie of this style. This is the first movie to actually kind of shock me that I can think of at this time. Watched it about 3 times on SD DVD and 2 times on BR, and there is a definite improvement even though it looked real good on SD DVD. Im viewing it on a 110"SS with a RUBY projector hooked up to a Samsung1200 and formerly a PS3, and both players looked very good.
