View Full Version : "Breach" Review Up At Hi-Def Digest -- 4/5 PQ & 4/5 AQ

"'Breach is as cold and steely-eyed as the villain it portays. Bathed in deep blues and silvers, the cinematography by Oscar-winner Tak Fujimoto ('The Silence of the Lambs'), 'Breach' is certainly not an eye-popping, rainbow-hued presentation, but given its intended stylistic effect, it looks great.
This 1.85:1 widescreen transfer is presented in 1080p/VC-1 video. As is expected for a new release, the source is impeccable, with no print issues or other blemishes. Blacks are rock solid, and though contrast appears intentionally muted, depth holds up well. Colors again are desaturated to the point where the film often veers on the monochromatic, but hues remain stable, with little noise and fleshtones about as accurate as is possible. Detail is nice and supple, if slightly softer than brighter, less muted recent HD DVD releases. My only major complaint is a slight edgy look to the transfers, with halos visible around hard-edges. (It's worth noting that the HD DVD side of this DVD combo release is certainly preferable to the flipside -- the standard-def version looks even more noticeably processed with edge enhancement, and detail is significantly weaker.)"
I'm looking forward to this one. My Netflix copy should be here tomorrow. I just hope Universal has fixed their combo problems. This would have been a buy for me if their recent combos weren't plagued with issues.
sivartk 06-12-07, 09:14 AM I saw this movie on a plane (VHS, cropped) so I can't comment about picture quality, but the film itself was rather slow and boring....worth a rent, but not a buy -- at least for me.
slcsnkman 06-12-07, 10:03 AM someone said this was very comparable to The Good Shepard..in the aspect of no action, very serious long movie...was he right? I have not seen it yet

I enjoyed The Good Shepherd. It needs to be your type of movie however. Breach was much better than The Good Shephered imo.
Well, I would have bought it but Best Bias of course didn't have it today, and I'm too busy at work to drive to Fry's.
Screw it, Amazon.com here I come.
SCHNEEDOO 06-12-07, 01:27 PM I just picked up a copy at Best Buy in Rochester, NY that was priced at $24.99. It rang up at $29.99 but I made the clerk change the price. The Greece store had 3 left at Noon.
Mr. Cinema 06-12-07, 01:34 PM I'm stopping by Best Buy after work. I hope they are mis-tickted at $24.99 there.
breach is a nice rental not a buy in my opinion. nice to watch it once and that is it.

So why was the poster in that thread saying it was soft?

My local BB also had these marked for $24.99. Could be a nationwide price mistake.

Maybe they were referring to their plush fluffy pillows.
mpalmieri1203 06-12-07, 07:58 PM playing this through my 360 hd-dvd and the soundtrack sounds very very low...other discs sound great...this doesn't sound that good....voices are way low while other noises are loud...
Vipper IV 06-12-07, 08:20 PM So why was the poster in that thread saying it was soft?
Because that poster is retarded; the movie is far from soft. Hell, just look at the characters' facial details -- that ain't soft.
MichaelHDDVD 06-12-07, 08:21 PM I am so glad I bought this movie :)
giantchicken 06-12-07, 08:40 PM Just got back from Circuit City and ended up buying this one because they had it tagged at $24.99. Rang up at $30 but I pointed to the label and they adjusted it. Wasn't planning on getting this one, but seeing it marked lower than expected pushed me over the edge.
assasyn 06-12-07, 09:49 PM No one had any copies. *Sigh*
Slim GoodBooty 06-12-07, 10:01 PM From what I'm hearing and I saw it on the theater it should be 5/5 for PQ. The movie is what it is.
MichaelHDDVD 06-12-07, 10:04 PM Yeah the PQ is nice, I see a little noise but not much. I give it 4.5 stars

Nice Score!
Ya i didnt want to spend 29.99 on it either but would have been willing to spend 24.99. I always search thru all the copies to find pricing errors but there was none to be found. i'll be patient though and look for pricing mistakes when i am in other stores over the weekend. Even though i didnt score on the Breach I was able to score ghost rider on bd for 14.99 due to a pricing error, and both harsh times (hd) and seven years in tibet for 19.99 each.
jus10 said 06-13-07, 04:09 AM the best buy near me also had this tagged at 24.99.. took it to the register, it rang up 30 and i pointed to the tag and they adjusted the price. not bad for a combo and decided to pick it up cause ive heard good things about it
Looks like Universal has still not fixed their combo problems. 10 minutes into this movie, it started stuttering on my A1 with 2.2 fw. The audio was gone, and it was acting as if I was pressing the pause button every half second. I cannot believe they have not sorted this out yet.
Yeah, I know, the problem is with my player. But for some reason, it plays all of my other HD DVDs fine, including Universal non-combos such as Monty Python's Meaning of Life, which I watched last night.

Will DVD laser cleaning kits work with HD DVD players?
