View Full Version : HD DVD - Time for another dry run ?
lgans316 06-12-07, 01:27 AM It looks like the HD DVD camp is set for another dry run with hardly a handful of blockbusters pending release. The BD camp has plans to release blockbuster titles like Spiderman, Kill Bill, ID4, I-Robot, POTC-3 etc may be by end of this year. Now this is where the power of the BD backing studios is going hit hard on the HD DVD camp.
Universal and Warner should come up with more titles and maintain the balance in the format war.

Well it's likely that there will be two additional Bourne films out on HD DVD by the end of the year add to that Evan Almighty (which better be a blockbuster considering the fact that it's most expensive comedy ever) and Universal is releasing a bunch of blockbuster catalog titles by the end of the year.
It has also been rumored that Weinstein will bring Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair out on HD DVD at some point.
Heroes? Battlestar Galactica?
Jay Mammoth 06-12-07, 01:56 AM Heroes, BSG, and my most anticipated Knocked Up. We should have Death Proof and Planet Terror as well.
How many of these are internationally acclaimed titles ?
Does it matter? No matter what anyone says, it's clear you're going to keep complaining about the release list just for the sake of doing it.
lgans316 06-12-07, 02:15 AM No way I am going to do that. There were very good titles released till date but most of the titles that are getting released are not internationally acclaimed ones / blockbusters except for very few.
zero_zep 06-12-07, 02:15 AM ID4 and I-robot? uh-huh...and kill bill you will have to import but at some time it could also be on hd dvd so thats not really just a blu ray title
Padriac 06-12-07, 02:21 AM - cue mention of evan almighty and other summer Universal movies.
- cue mention of fox's horrible BD support and Disney's currently tepid BD support.
- cue mention that next week HD DVD is releasing way more titles than BD.
- cue mention that HD DVD currently has more announced titles than BD.
- cue somebody mentioning that Universal's titles won't be able to stand against Spiderman 3, POTC 3, Fantastic Four 2, and other BD exclusive summer money-makers.
- cue fanboy back-and-forth followed by a good old AVS thread-lock.
There. I saved us all a bunch of time. Let's all go enjoy a movie instead.

-Evan almighty isn't going to be as good as it should be.(Carell is awesome)
-FOX still prints BDs?
-Do you really want Daylight on HD-DVD?
-Unless Uni pulls out JP, S3 will move more.(When I look at the Box office from BD exclusives it's in the Billions, but HotRod looks awesome and 'The Kingdom' looks unlike any movie I have ever seen before. )
-I want to hear the T-rex roar in TrueHD. until then I'm keeping my BDs. And my one copy of CoM on HDDVD.
Edit: I wanted to make sure your post was right on the money. ;)
Iggster 06-12-07, 02:45 AM i got a feeling their holding back jp trilogy for the spidy trilogy ;)

LOL. So true, but I’m at work so going to enjoy a movie is out of the question. If I wasn’t at work I wouldn’t be posting and stirring up the fan boys is a good way to keep my eyes open till 0600.
P.S. Lgans, what constitutes “Internationally acclaimed”?
lgans316 06-12-07, 02:57 AM Internationally acclaimed : Blockbusters, Internationally recognized titles, Movies that created a WOW effect etc. For American audience I agree that the future HD DVD catalog looks arguably rich but not as pronounced like Spiderman Trilogy, POTC-3, Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2, I-Robot, ID4, Mr & Mrs. Smith, The Cars, The Incredibles etc.
It's not that HD-DVD releases are drying up, it's just that there are more comedies than action blockbusters in the mix in the near term. Is that so bad? I like comedies.

The fourth quarter will be hot and heavy in both formats.
Many titles have not yet been announced...

If you honestly think that the holiday season will be a dormant period for HD DVD releases, then I think you're going to be pleasantly surprised this Fall.
I Superman I 06-12-07, 04:43 AM Sin City will be great for BD too, but uhhh, last time I checked we had quotes from Uni guys saying they were working on an HD title, not very well known, called "Jaws", yeah maybe it's not up to date like Pirates 3, but seriously, it's F'ing Jaws lol.
Plus really there is PLENTY of Universal titles to look forward to that have yet to be released in theaters, aswell as Weinstein titles, and of course our superior versions of Warner titles :)

???
Dry run? Last I checked, there were quite a few titles listed for the summer. Not enough blockbusters? Who cares? Hit hard? Weren't the Pirate movies supposed to do that? How are they going to hit hard, with such a small audience? Maybe sell 100,000 copies? Woopee!
Much ado about nothing.

Not even 100,000. Last I heard they sold 47,000 combined.

Who cares?
TV Casualty 06-12-07, 08:56 AM Come on guys, haven't you learned yet? Not knowing what is coming out does not equal a weak lineup. Can we stop beating the dead horse now? It wasn't true in February when we didn't know what was coming beyond the "drought," and it's not true now...heck, there's not even a drought this time to precede it.
Blu-Ray pushes titles early and makes a lot of noise, leading to disappointment when they are delayed. HD DVD is more reserved, leading to disappointment when they are quiet about stuff early on. Either way, you get some disappointment and some payoff.
I learned my lesson the first time ("OMG HD DVD IS DEAD, THEY SAID NOTHING AT CES!!") - it's a shame that others are still in the dark.
Rusty James' post above this one pretty much sums it up.

See what you're doing here? You're predicting a "dry run" of HD DVD titles when there's actually a whole pile of stuff announced through the summer. And then comparing it to a theoretical list of BDs that may (or may not) get released. I wouldn't feel comfortable assuming that *any* Fox title will be out by the end of the year.
We don't know what Q3/Q4 holds for either format at this point. But I don't see any reason to assume that it favors BD or that the HD DVD releases will dry up.
