After reading the Tier thread I must be blind.

After watching both POTC movies I still don't think either comes even close to the PQ in Crank. Especially around the 20 minute mark I think it is where he is swimming in the pool with the cartel leader.

I can tell its just the look of film vs 1080p/24 digital. Don't get me wrong DMC is definitely the 2nd best BR I've seen but there are still times when film grain is apparent. Now, I am one of the few I guess here that doesn't care about the "intent" or "look of film" I just want the sharpest picture possible which Crank more than delivers. I guess this film will continue to be my eyecandy show off piece.

There's no denying the fantastic PQ and AQ, but it was, unequivocally, one of the worst movies to not go straight to DVD.

I won't even keep Crank in my library for demo material, it's just THAT bad.

I wasn't a big fan of Crank but it still blew DMC out of the water. DMC is just a heaping pile of crap.

I realize the relativism of trying to compare the merits of a movie on a message board.....but DMC is afforded the benefit of being a Disney movie whose plot is fantasy-based and the tone light and comedic.

Crank is supposed to be be a hyperactive action/drama that plays more like a comedy because the plot, along with character development, is...well, laughable.

My money is on DMC

As far as recent "guns and explosions" action movies go, Crank is a masterpiece. DMC was pretty bad but it's a top-notch HT experience.

I would say Crank and DMC are about even, but I'd give the dge to DMC because I prefer the look of film. Film grain doesn't bother me unless it's distracting.

I watched Crank for the 2nd time the other day and couldn't wait for it to finish. Just didn't hold up for me and I'm glad I didn't buy the Blu Ray.

I have both, watched both and I have to give the PQ nod to Crank. It just looks better overall. Better colors, much sharper.

Crank has almost 100% day shots where DMC is about 60% night so its no wonder Crank looks better.

If that was, indeed, his intention then kudos! :p He created the cinematic version of World's Deadliest Car Chases III.

Crank is one of the most pointless, rediculous movies ever made. The premise alone doesn't even hold water, and the acting and screenplay are herrendous. If I want to watch a film shot digitally, I'll watch Apocalypto--which aside from looking better than Crank, is also a great film. Pirates 2 rather sucks too though lol.

Now, this thread wasn't about the quality of content in these 2 films. It's is nothing more than a PQ discussion. Maybe it does have to do with day vs. night shots because most of my complaints on both POTC movies are night shots.

Agreed. Both have superb PQ. It's a tough call really. Nothing beats DMC for the night scenes though.

DMC is too dark in a lot of scenes, ruins so much detail. Crank looks much better.

I still don't think Crank looks as good as everyone says. It has edge enhancement in many of the day shots and on Statham's beard throughout the whole movie. The PQ of Crank looks like video... Plain and simple.

DMC looks softer but I think has more overall detail than Crank. I think that's why it has a more filmlike look to it. I liked DMC much better than Crank as well.

Both movies have pros and cons in terms of video quality because they were both shot on different formats.

I thought Crank was very entertaining and lots of fun. I've already watched it twice.

I own both. I really like both movies......they each have their qualities. The picture quality on both are also superb. Crank does however, seem like video (really clear video though), and DMC is much more filmlike (I guess because it was shot on film! lol)

both crank and dmc are absolutely terrible.

i dont get all the fuss about DMC, i think curse of the black pearl looks much better. most of DMC either takes place at night or in the rain, and the movie doesnt seem to have quite the pop as the first one. cotbp is also a much better movie.

I don't get everyone's beef with Crank. It is what it is, cheap entertainment and I enjoyed it. And I don't see how anyone can say it looks terrible...if so, you better be an AF pilot because there's no way anyone has good enough eyesight to say otherwise.

I like action movies and I didn't like Crank at all, and I thought I would. I have liked some of the made for tv movies on Sci-fi saturday than Crank. I wont ever watch it again, I hardly ever watch a movie that didn't at least entertain me and this is probably in my bottom 5. I won't watch a movie just because it has great PQ, however I do want the movies I want to see to have the best PQ and AQ.

But comparing a pirate movie shoot on film with a.. a.. Jason Statham movie shot on digital cam is like comparing apples with hamburgers.

Sure some will like the one more then the other, but they both will have pros and cons.
