This title keeps on surprising me with its longevity, and now it has reached a new high -- #3 among all DVDs on Amazon. Pretty cool.

(At #1 is Planet Earth on SD DVD, and at #2 is Deadwood -- The Complete Third Season.)

People are loving Planet Earth....I can't help but to think there's so many people wasting their money on the DVD version.

I mean, isn't the major draw to Planet Earth the amazing visuals? Wouldn't you think most of the people into that have a decent size, HDTV to watch it on? Why spend 10-15 bucks less on an inferior version of it?

i loved the planet earth hd dvd set.

unfortunately, it was not on combo disks so most friends/family can't watch it.

so, we just ordered a copy of the dvd version too.

IMO it sucks having to buy 2 sets just to watch on older setups.

HDTVs have only penetrated about 1/3 of US households. And within that, a pretty big chuck (around 30%, by most estimates) are not viewing *any* high def material on them. And within the 70% or so who are watching high def, only a very small percentage have players that can play HD media.

We sometimes forget this at AVS, but we're talking about a niche within a niche within a niche.

Of course, this fact makes the #3 standing of a $70 HD DVD documentary box set (more than a month after release) all the more impressive.

....or to get all the material. I'm considering picking up the SD DVD version to get the ~2hrs of featurettes on the making of each episode and the companion series "Planet Earth: The Future". Even if the extras weren't mastered in HD, at least give them to the people who are paying more for the set!

I would guess the price drop to $299 for the HD-A2 a few weeks a go is responsible

this is another reason we bought the dvd version too.

IMO they should have released this on combo only and not released a dvd version at all.

Yes, which is why it's important for both HD formats (but moreso for HD DVD, because we're gonna win ;) ) that prices on HDTVs continue to drop in order to accelerate adoption. Then that smallest matrioshka nesting-doll of a niche will be able to grow. A rising tide lifts all niches. Or something like that.

If you think PE at #3 is amazing, you should see what ranking Bruce Almighty is at (as of Tuesday, June 12th at 8:00am PST). ;)

[sorry, i took a screen shot, but i don't know how to insert pictures]

Yea, I think we're looking at the effect of all those cheap players being sold. Either that, or everyone is buying a new copy every week. :D

I looked at the Amazon top 10 this morning and noticed that 6 out of 10 of them were box sets. This tells me that people use Amazon because they have better prices on box sets. But still likely shop locally for regular DVDs.

I rarely buy DVDs from Amazon unless it is a box set or HD-DVD. Local prices for box sets and HD's suck. But for regular DVDs, the prices are close enough to Amazon that it isn't really worth ordering online.

Either way, great to see something like PE sell so well! I know I'm glad I bought it. I sold my Gears of War for the 360 to get it! Gotta keep the peace around the house...

Makes a lot of sense. However, for me right now, being a Canadian and with our amazing dollar, its is soo much cheaper to buy anything from amazon :D I love it!
