View Full Version : Are any other HD DVD folks concerned about titles???

OK, I just bought my A2 a few days ago and am very happy with it. I guess if there is one area that has me a little worried it would be that 800lb Gorilla that would be studio support and projected titles coming out. After reading through various reputable sites about upcoming releases, it appears that there are very frew if any exclusive HD titles. But, sadly to me, there appear to be a bevy of exclusive Blu Ray titles, many of which I really would like to have in High Def.

Hey.... Im not wavering yet..... just wondering if this studio support thing is gonna end up hurting us HD DVD backers at some point?

As I have said elsewhere, there are very few BD titles out or announced that interest me. Perhaps you should have done some research before buying.

I was a bit concerned 4 months ago...now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to afford a bunch of these titles coming out.

I'm not concerned

Universal has more movies released/scheduled for release than Sony + Disney. Toss in Weinstein the small HD DVD exclusive and Universal + Weinstein has as many titles as Sony + Disney + Fox

I was concerned back in january, and then they announced a slew of titles and I felt better. Those titles came and went now, and most were of mediocre PQ, and not the A list titles I had hoped for. With only Big Lebowski left on my Radar for upcomming titles I want, It looks like the rest of the summer I will be feeling rather Blu.

Have a look at this thread comparing upcoming exclusives: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=856401

You will see that HD DVD has more exclusives currently lined up in the coming months. It is, of course, a matter of personal taste whether you think these exclusives are better for HD DVD or better for Blu-ray.

I personally like what I'm seeing.

I was concerned when I just got my HD DVD add-on at Christmas and after CES w/ all the Blu-ray support...but these past couple months have had a complete 180' on my thinking!

I don't think we'll see this thing be decided for a while! Just take a look at Planet Earth HD DVD rankings on Amazon...#3!!

Do we really need one of these threads every single day? Ironically, HD-DVD has more announced titles through summer / fall than Blu-Ray, and better titles as well. Breach, Liar Liar, Bruce ALmighty (all today), Hot Fuzz, 300, Dawn of the Dead, Heroes, Shaun of the Dead, Lebowski, Blood Diamond, Bourne Identity, Scent of a Woman, Darkman, Sea of Love, Meet the Fockers -- what exactly are you people looking for?

Check out the Blu-Ray releases with street dates and tell me where the great titles are, 'cause I can't find any! Unless Wild Hogs is your cup of tea.

Not yet. In fact, if you look at the numbers and the release schedule, HD DVD will have both more titles and more exclusives than the other side by the end of the summer.

A format war is not an ideal situation, but there's nothing to be "concerned" about on the HD DVD side. At least nothing that shouldn't concern the other side just as equally.

I'd also advise you to take a close look at that "studio support". How many titles have been released by Fox and MGM. How many are announced? How many of the promised Disney classics have been announced?

There's nothing to get worked up about at this stage.

Hey...take it easy bud..... dont read the thread then. :D

Seriously, its a new format and many of us early buyers like to hear more than once from other backers that all is well. Ya know.... show some love! The "We already talked about this" replies should be used on the hardware forums for the more established stuff!

Peace :)

Treu, not much out of the FOX or MGM camp...but when or if they do "release the hounds" and it is exclusive to BD then it will cause some pain.

Nah, you're right I guess for now...no need to panic. I just wanted to hear it from other HD DVD follks so I'd feel better...... call it Forum Elixir for incessantly worried.

But that's a big "if". ;)

And, again, this is something that doesn't favor the other side completely. The HD DVD side has some pretty strong "hounds" of their own to release, if the time comes to do that.

Enjoy your A2!

Once fox realized that they can't sell Catalog titles for $30+ bucks they pretty much cancelled everything except new releases. That and they are probably waiting for BD+ to finalize which who knows how long that will take.

My HD-DVD collection is sitting at 25 titles as of today and I still know of at least 2 or 3 more I will buy next time I'm near Fry's (The Nutty Professor and Trading Places off the top of my head), point is, I don't buy NEARLY as many movies as others seem to, and even I'll probably be over 30 when my copies of 300 and Boune Identity get here. I bought my player in Jan, I'm personally WAY ahead of the buying rate I had when DVD first came out, and figure with titles like Bourne Ultimatum, Knocked Up, Deliverance, Cool Hand Luke, American Pie, Scarface, Zodiac, Dawn of the Dead, etc, etc, not to mention any other surprises and unannounced holiday titles the stuidos have in store for us (I don't care about exclusive this or that - I want content period - and its there, ok, maybe a Spielberg surprise WOULD be sweet for HD-DVD, AHEM JAWS ;)), I'm more then satisfied...I'll most likely be zeroing in on 100 movies by the end of the year and am in no way "concerned about titles"....I see nothing to worry about other then having the funds to buy, buy, buy! :D

As someone who just ordered an A2, there are titles from BD that I'd like to see in HD so I agree w/ the OP. It's all a matter of taste. Only way HD to have mass appeal is all released HD titles avai on both format or a fully functional uni player.

There are only two titles I am waiting on for blu-ray at the moment. One is an older title (Bram Stoker's Dracula) and the other is a really old one (Guns of Navarone.) Other than that after looking at the upcoming BD releases I don't see any I would purchase. The two titles I am waiting for don't (to my knowledge) have release dates.

Universal has rumored at 300 more titles into the next year, and there are 210+ out now with 50-60 more by then of September alone, I wouldn't worry at all.

I'm sorry but I had to drop one comment in here...Scent of a Woman is not a classic??? WTH are you smoking? Shaun of the Dead??? Perfect Brit humor.

EDIT: I'm format neutral, but it really makes me LOL when I see how far people will go to boo-hoo the content on the opposing format. Several of those movies you listed are movies that I'd buy.

Quite frankly, it pays to be neutral because there is so much dang QUALITY content out there to buy on BOTH formats, that I'm trying to play catch-up most of the time.

I laughed my a$$ of at parts of Mystery Men, and own it on SD DVD. Really enjoy Dante's Peak, predictable but entertaining, and only about 100 minutes long. Important when you have limited time for movies after kids go to sleep, 100 minute action movies are a nice option.

I am sure there are many more "worthless" titles that some people are too embarassed to admit they enjoy.

We should all buy and watch what we like, who cares if some guy on the net you have never met thinks your movies suck, maybe he sucks. LOL

Universal has some good titles, I guess you missed the some part, and that WARNER and PARAMOUNT have done the best so far with their titles. WARNER is probably the best, but I guess you chose to ignore that, for arguement's sake. Please actually read before you make a wide sweeping ignorant post.

LotR is a New Line property. They are supposedly going to be releasing in both formats, but to date have not announced anything on either. I wouldn't expect those for another year or so at least.

Star Wars is distributed by Fox, who is BD-exclusive. But it's a case where Lucas calls the shots and can release it any old way he wants to, so it's up in the air as to what eventual format it would land on. Keep in mind that he waited 7 years to release it on standard DVD. I wouldn't hold your breath for it to show up in HD any time soon.

The easiest way to tell who owns a title is just to check the back of the existing DVD. The studio info is right there. Some titles do change hands every now and then, but things like LotR and SW are pretty solid.

I wouldn't worry about the imbalance until Fox and MGM return to the BD-releasing fold. Until then, Universal should--in the short term anyway--be able to keep up with Sony and Disney.

However, if the return happens in the Fall time when it appears the BD releases will all kick it up again (in time for the holidays I suppose), then HD DVD may look like it's standing still again (re: The Release-less Window of January-March 2007).

This is funny, I just got a PS3 and to be honest there are only a hand full of BD exclusive movies I even want.

Enemy of the state, maybe the POTC ones for my GF and thats it. Maybe the x-men series to show off the HD, but I already have so many amazing HD-dvd's that do that. Out of that huge list of movies they have there is almost nothing worth getting.

7 months, I own at least 100 HDDVD and probably 70 BR titles. As I said before, the BR titles are for the most part bad with a few nice ones thrown in. Universal is better, but in all honesty, Warner and Paramount are realesing amazing titles so far, Flags, Letters to Iwa, 300, Untouchables, Purple Rain, Top Gun, Blood Diamond, The Warriors, The whole Jack Ryan. Warner gets special credit for realesing all the older movies like the Searchers, Rio, Battle, Road Warrior. Great movies aren't all about the latest big weekend IMHO...

HD DVD camp will face a stiff competition when the below titles are released in BD.

2. Kill Vol 1 & 2
3. ID4
4. I-Robot
5. Titanic
6. POTC-3
7. Minority Report
8. Godzilla

What about The Patriot Extended Cut? Am I the only guy who liked that movie? Thats one of the only upcoming BD exclusive titles I'm envious of...it should do well for BR.

According to IMDB Paramont Home Video has the US distribution rights for DVD. That means a HD DVD press. :D

My personal problem is risking spending too much money on too many titles, when personally I need to save money right now, so it's really hard. I'm doing the best to keep away from starting to buy through Amazon, with all the titles availible, free shipping, lowered prices, ease of use.... if i start buying amazon, my money is out the window.

But really us HD-DVD folks have ALOT to worry about, I mean what will happen when amazing movies like Ghost Rider, and the Grudge 2 come out! I mean I don't think E.T. , Jurassic Park or Jaws could stand a chance in the wake of The Grudge 2, better prepare to ebay my player now.

Seriously though, there are less then a dozen titles that Sony have made I would purchase, really Disney is the only BD company I care about for titles.
