View Full Version : BD vs. HD-DVD : Is it really a war worth fighting?

I'm not necessarily talking about the technologies. I do believe it is important for there to only be one format out for high-definition movie watching. I don't know if it is going to be Blu-Ray or HD-DVD, but time will tell.

The war I'm discussing is the fight between HD-DVD fanboys and Blu-Ray fanboys. Isn't it obvious that we are all fighting for the widespread use of HD home theatre experiences? We shouldn't be fighting each other about what the better format is and insulting others about Sony vs. Microsoft vs. Toshiba.

I support HD-DVD. I hope it wins, though I am not optimistic, nor do I believe the end for the format is inevitable. The future will hold what is in store for the format I own and operate at my home.

The trash-talking is incredibly ridiculous. This is not the Dallas Cowboys vs. the Philadelphia Eagles (whom I hate with a passion), this is two HD formats that need to grow and prove that it can either coincide or eventually replace DVD. We shouldn't be fighting about the capabilities of BD and HD-DVD if neither format is going to survive. This isn't a battle worth fighting; this isn't life and death. This is technological entertainment.

If both these formats eventually grow enough to hold their own against the juggarnaut that is DVD, then we should start our war.

There's no real point to any "war" among fans, although is there a real point to a sports "war" (as you mentioned) either? In the end its just a bunch of people arguing about nothing important.

Blu Ray or HD-DVD will succeed by their sales, and not because of some bitching on an internet forum. Much like sports team succeed by their play on the field, and not some inane arguments between their fans. Neither serves much real purpose.

Maybe its just a matter of personal priorities to me, but to me, a person spends a lot more time devoting his or her life to support a home-town team than a movie player. It's great to have a connection to the city like that and support them in a fight against others around the country. I don't get that from this HD war.

I'd post a clever retort here, but I'm afraid it would be lost on a Skins fan. ;)

This always struck me as an odd chant.

Everybody in the known football world knows how to spell Eagles, yet only Philadelphia fans feel the need to flaunt that fact.

That's fine that you beat us 3 out the last 4 times. Facts do not lie.

But we got rid of our over-the-hill head coach. You still have yours.

Atleast we can agree on something the Eagles fan base is made up of morons much like the zealots on these board. Although I found it quite funny when they cheered Michael Irvings injury.

all you need to do is look at Buffalo's record when he was head coach and you would have your answer.

Cowboys suck, HDDVD sucks ! Nuff said :)

Wow this thread got way off topic.
I'll try to comment on the OP topic. I suppose people are fighting over this is because we all pretty much wanted one format from the beginning. I support bluray because it has higher potential in the future versus an already finished and possibly already maxed out technology. There is more space to work with so we don't have to worry about compressing the hell out of everything and it will be using Java which is powerful and robust and has a great community process to help create new innovations.
Once one format gives up, the other will be free to prepare for the even tougher battle against DVD.

Until one format wins, widespread adoption won't happen...unless both formats have releases by all studios...

It isn't the format war that's slowing adoption. It's the fact that most average movie buyers already think DVD is High Definition and don't understand the difference.

I look at his time in Buffalo and all I see is the Music City Miracle (which I was at).

Hey! Remember when the 'Boys lost both inter-division games to the Birds last season? Or when Romo botched the chip-shot field goal that would've won the game??

....Fly Eagles, Fly
