View Full Version : Purchase movies before player?
khwiggins2 06-12-07, 04:12 PM This is just a poll to see how many have purchased blu-ray movies before purchasing a player.
I currently have an hd-dvd player and have been waiting for what I consider a decently priced full featured blu-ray player. However, during the long wait I have seen a few movies that I will definitely want that are on sale, or I worry will be not available when I'm ready to purchase. I am considering buying them now and waiting until a blu-ray or combo player is available. Probably the biggest issue with this is having movies waiting there for me that I can't watch.
Jiffylush 06-12-07, 04:16 PM Save the money towards a player, then when one comes into your price range you will already have the cash.
I don't think we are going to see 'Disney Vault' type issues for a long time, seems to me that anything you want from launch till next Christmas should be easy to pick up.
Unless you get an amazing deal (ie Matrix HD for $20) then don't bother. Just save the bucks for the player.

con a friend to buy a ps3 =)
what price are you waiting for for blu-ray players to drop to? i believe sony just released one that cost $499, the ps3 can be had for less than that on ebay. ebay is where i got my ps3, 486 + 20 shipping for the $599 model. i been enjoying bd's ever since. currently waiting on hdmi receiver to arrive to drool on the pcm lossless tracks.
i wouldnt buy any titles prior to owning a player. chances are you will see players come out within the year offering free movies. also i dont think bd title prices have anywhere to go but down. so the longer you wait the better deals u should get. as far as titles running out, not likely, there are tons of online places that sell them.
bboisvert 06-12-07, 04:24 PM or I worry will be not available when I'm ready to purchase.
What possible titles could fall into this category at such an early stage?
khwiggins2 06-12-07, 04:27 PM I'm mostly waiting for BD-i functionality with full audio support < $500. However, I've been seeing all of these sales for blu-ray discs and it's tempting to get them now. Some of them like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, I worry won't be readily available by November when there is a much greater selection of movies. I loved the movie, but don't know how many share my tastes.

I just don't think there is a huge demand for LXG, but what the hell do I know?
Buy them if you want to.
soremekun 06-12-07, 04:31 PM I "purchased" Babel and I do not have a player. It was free and I just had to pay for shipping.
cnickersonjr 06-12-07, 04:32 PM I purchased two movies before I stumbled onto a open box Samsung BD-P1000 for a little over $300. I was waiting fo the Samsung Duo, but with these low prices 2 players may be a better value. I may sell off the BDP1000 and still get the Duo. I see no problem buying movies before the player.
Jiffylush 06-12-07, 04:38 PM Hmm, that is odd, why would someone in the Blu-ray software forum say they had no interest in buying blu-ray movies?
Things that make you say hmm I guess.

it's those damn trolls that's what it is.

That's for the HD DVD fanboys that are always trolling the BD forum.

Assuming that BD follows previously-established video release patterns, there's no logic to that statement. LXG will be as "available" in November as it is right now. Why wouldn't it be?

The only precident I can see for this kind of expectation is the 'Disney Vault' where they release something for a short period of time and then it goes 'back in the vault'. I see no reason that any of these movies wouldn't be available (at least from amazon) for the forseable future.
khwiggins2 06-12-07, 05:56 PM I've seen movies released early in the life of DVD like "Gleaming the Cube" that I liked, but didn't sell very well. As a result, the only way you can buy it now is used, and since it wasn't popular and there aren't a lot available, its way more than it should be.

I put that option there so that anyone who's just dead set against blu-ray and can't pass a poll w/o voting, has a place to vote.
Kind of like when I vote for the President, I vote for Daffy Duck as the lesser evil. Actually, I just get a kick out of imagining Daffy going off on Congress. :D
I wonder how he'd do if his name was was on the poll rather than a write in...
Alan Gordon 06-12-07, 06:24 PM I owned 15-20 Blu-ray movies before I got my PS3.
I owned 8-12 HD DVD movies before I got my HD-A2.
Granted, I wouldn't have had that many Blu-ray movies before I got my PS3 had it not been for the Amazon 50% off sale and Best Buy's "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" deal...
Since I now own a player, I voted for "I already own a player and purchase movies."

In fairness, Gleaming was not discontinued because of low sales, but because of rights issues. The distribution was transferred from Pioneer to another company (Lions Gate?) that just never bothered to put it out. There may be other issues there that keep this title in limbo, I'm not sure.
That kind of stuff is going to naturally happen with any format. But I don't see any current titles falling victim to that any time soon. What we've seen so far has been almost 100% big studio titles that ain't going anywhere.
You don't really have to worry about scooping things up until the really obscure stuff starts coming out from the smaller labels, and that may be a couple of years away. In addition, if a title (like LXG) should ever go out-of-print, you'll get plenty of warning on these forums. When you're only dealing with 300 titles, having one go OOP will get noticed pretty quickly.
balanceofpower 06-12-07, 07:32 PM I purchased discs on the same day that I bought the player as I generally do with each format or video game console.
Wendell R. Breland 06-12-07, 08:57 PM Purchase movies before player?I would look at the BD deals that are currently available (Buy 2 Get 1 Free or 40% Off, etc). Most of the deals have threads about them right here. If the deals have the title(s) that are desirable for you, then I would make the purchase.
Bangedup 06-12-07, 09:02 PM I use Nextflix....people still buy movies?
Slim GoodBooty 06-12-07, 09:06 PM I bought discs before I had a player for both formats.
aaronwt 06-12-07, 11:52 PM Just pay the money and get a PS3. No player whether $500 or $1500 can match the speed of the PS3. I can't get a stand alone player now because the PS3 has spoiled me. it would be like taking two steps backward.
Nasty N8 06-13-07, 12:11 AM To clarify I have about 17 BD movies and have the Panny BD-10A on order (better audio features). Just waiting for it to come in so I can pick it up.
Nate
MASrules 06-13-07, 09:07 AM I had 3 Blu-ray and 2 HD DVD movies before owning a player. After finally finding a PS3, I returned the HD DVD movies and have since bought 50 more blu-ray movies.
Jiffylush 06-13-07, 09:22 AM I use Nextflix....people still buy movies?
I use Netflix and BB, and I have still managed to buy some BDs. Well, only 5, but still some ;)

Yup. Some of the movies I like to watch with my wife. However, a lot of my movies I have to catch her at the right time to get her to watch them. Also, there's just something about owning a copy of the movie that I enjoy. I don't get that sense of ownership when renting.

Funny, I find myself less likely to watch titles I own, because I don't have that urge to get them watched and back in the mail.
I have the two pirates movies and haven't watched either, they haven't even been in the PS3 yet.
I tend to purchase movies that the kids are going to watch (repeatedly), that way I know we will get our money's worth out of them.
AaronSCH 06-13-07, 10:57 AM I despise renting through Blockbuster, Hollywood Video or Netfix. I buy what I want and they are always on the shelf ready for my mood. If it is a stinker I sell it online or trade it locally. I almost always recoup most of my investment plus I get to see the movie. It makes more sense to me than renting it and then turning around and having to buy it.
I did have, maybe 5 discs before I bought my PS3. T1 and T2 and 3 discs I got from Best Buy Buy 2, Get 1 Free.
Actually I think I bought a few more from other sales, a couple Warner titles and a couple Sony titles on sale.

I strongly second that. The PS3 is like a fine wine that only gets better with age.
