View Full Version : How critical is the rear seperation of your two surround speakers in a 7.2 system?

The width of the rear wall is 17 feet and the two speakers will be approx. 6 feet in from each side with a distance between each speaker of approx. 5 feet. The rears are going in columns and I'm a little concerned that their might not be enough separation between the two speakers. There will be 5 seats in the rear row with appox. 25 inches from each side.

I'm probably making a bigger deal out of this than I should but would just like to confirm this.

Thanks
Steve :)

Well according to the THX website the 2 rear speakers should be next to each other. Also, how are the subs positioned?

The subs are located in the right front corner of the room and the rear sub is located in the left rear of the room. The rear walls are angled as well as the front at a 45 degree angle. Do you think the location where there at now is really a big deal?

Thanks

I can't speak to your particular setup because I don't know it, but sub placement is usually very important for good sound quality.

THX 7.1 Surround Setup (http://www.thx.com/home/setup/speakers/71.html)

"7.1 SPEAKER LAYOUT

A 7.1 system setup uses 4 surround speakers. To complete the total surround sound experience, the SBL and SBR should be the direct firing type, placed together on the back wall. This allows the THX Advanced Speaker Array, or ASA technology to deliver its maximum effect.

If the SBL and the SBR can't be placed together, refer to the pre-amplifier or receiver's "THX Setup" menu for alternative configurations to maximize your system's potential. "

The OP makes no mention that his AVR has ASA or for that matter anything about THX...the more common and preferred setup is the DD EX 7.1 with the rears spread apart...my room is 15" feet wide, and I have the rears about 4' apart give or take an inch.

I basically tried to evenly divide the back wall so that the surround field would be as even and full as it could be...

The main use of the rear speakers is to anchor certain surround effects behind you and keep them well separated from the surround information at your sides. As such, rear speaker separation isn't absolutely critical, but it is useful to have them at least 60 degrees apart.

See attached diagram.

7.1-channel surround processing runs the two rear speakers in stereo. Since our human hearing is not very good behind us, it really helps to spread the rear speakers wide apart in order to hear left-vs-right separation back there. The wide spread also cuts down on imaging reversals as well as providing better rear envelopment.

My rear surrounds are going to be 5 feet apart and should be fine and the speaker manufacture I'm working with recomended the subwoofer locations so I'm comfortable with their placement.

Now it's onto sheetrocking and all of the other fun stuff.

Thanks again for your comments

My rears are about 4' apart and ~12' behind me. Sound fine.

Given the difficulty in localizing sound behind us, I suspect that anywhere in the ballpark of the specs mentioned above will be fine.
