Hi there, I am interested in a Non HD Non Blue Ray DVD player that will upscale dvds from blockbuster etc to 1080i 720p.

I just bought a Pioneer PDP 5080 HD, Have a Yamaha RXV861 receiver, Kef Kht3500 speakers.

I am wondering what would be the best upconverting DVD Player to complete my system? OR should I rely on the Receiver or TV to do the Upscaling?

Please let me know your thoughts, Thanking you in advance.

Note that $300 gets you into the price range of the Toshiba HD-DVD players.

Otherwise, I have been pleased with my Oppo players. The 981 is $229 and the 970 is $149. Some people report enhanced macroblocking on plasma and DLP with Faroudja-chip players like the 981; if you don't want to worry about that the 970 uses a different chipset.

The Sony NS75H scores about the same as the Oppo 970 for somewhat less money.

You can see recent test reports for all of these players here: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi

Costco has Philips 1080p upscaling DVD player on sale the week of July 9-15 for $65, it includes HDMI cable, it is the lowest price for 1080p upconverting DVD player in the market. I have it a few weeks for $62 from Best Buy without HDMI cable, it is very good for the money. If you don't like it you can return to any Costco without time limit.
