I got a HD DVD Combo Format DVD,its the DVE (Digital Video Essentials) Calibration DVD.This disc is a (hybrid disc) with HD DVD content on side one and the original Standard Definition version of DVE on side 2.Is this something new guys,i never heard of it its the first time. And how does this work?.And does that mean that all Bluray and HD DVD's do this same thing,on one side of them its the SD version and on the other its the HD version?.

It's commonly refered to a "combo disc" and is exclusive to HDDVD.

HDDVD can even pull a cooler trick where both the SD and HDDVD content are on the same side so you still get the lovely disc art.

there are no hybrid BDs, there are several combo HD DVDs.

how it works is simple the disk media is 1.2mm thick. DVD and HD DVD use .6mm so what they do is take one .6mm DVD and glue it to an other .6mm HD DVD, the same way there are some double sided DVDs.

BD is at .1mm so in theory a two sided BD could exist and according to Warner they are thinking of a BD/HD DVD combo

The good thing about combos is that you have two types of data, the bad part is that they are more expensive to produce and studios tend to increase the price. The other thing is that if you have a nice set-up watching SD becomes more and more of a none issue.

Some like them (they want the SD), some hate them (paying more for something they won’t use)

I hated MGM's (it was MGM, wasn't it?) widescreen on one side, fullscreen on the other dvds. I suppose I like combo discs even less. They need to figure out that nobody wins with combo discs.

I think you are 1/2 right.

I think it was WB but for their MGM disks. WB bought part of the MGM collection some years back and it is those catalogue titles that they did DS wide/full in paper cases (at least those are the ones I have that way

I personaly don't like them and won't buy them but there are plenty of consumers that love the combo discs. They can watch hidef at home in the theater room and SD in the minivan driving to grandmas house. I think its wrong to say there are no winners.

People who have more than 1 DVD player in their house wins. Why have to buy a HD DVD for the HD DVD player and a SD DVD player for other players in the house. And I bet that is a lot of people.
