View Full Version : my pioneer purchase dilemma
just like everyone else i want my 1080p (i sit CLOSE), deeper blacks, 60", and yes all while i eat my birthday cake. :D
the 6070 is a great set at a great price, but i know that in 8 months time patience would reward me with the new 60" for a comparable price. which begins the dilemma, what do i do in the interim.
btw, due to a recent move i currently do not own a tv which only exacerbates the situation (that and the gf telling me to pick a damn tv already  ).
heres the plan:
i can get the 50" elite (1140hd) locally for what costco is selling the 5070 which is also less or on par with what sponsors are selling the 5080 for.
id like to get the elite now and let it hold me over till the new 60" settles in price. i figure due to some patience i can get both sets for about the same price as what the 60" msrp currently is ;) (within a grand or so).
the only problem is, will the 5080 be that much better than the 1140. no one has the 5080 near me, and wont have it for at least a few weeks if not months. those local stores that "can get it" are also quoting me $3500 msrp pricing on the 5080 as well.
if its just slightly better i can cope. but if its drastically better, ill be annoyed i didnt wait a month. oh, why not wait? because that price on the 1140 is only good for another week (due to a sale + coupon).
my only hope is that i can get the 1140hd now and by some sort of chance be able to get a hands on preview of the 5080 while im still in the 30 day grace period.
forgive my superficial angst, i know that buying a tv shouldnt be an existential dilemma. for those that understand my plight feel free to share your plamsa-buying-anxiety wisdom.
thanks.

I got my 5080 from there and got a really really good deal. I was on the fence like you but then I saw the price and I jumped at it. Amazon had it at a similar price yesterday but no longer. These sets are selling real fast. Any of the other sponsors would probably be equally good but as I didn't try them I dont really know.
thanks for the info, though i was already aware of the pricing.
if i can get that price locally, it might not be an issue, but ive been burned purchasing online a few times and am quite jaded about doing so for such a pricey and delicate purchase.
and at that price, the 1140 is still cheaper and local. the price and the fact that the elite will be easier to unload used for a decent price is what makes the decision difficult.
dssturbo1 06-14-07, 03:00 PM the 1140 is an excellent display.
is the 5080 better ,... yes. BUT unless your sitting there with them side by side you and the gf are gonna be very happy with the 1140 while you wait on the 6010/pro150hd to possibly have price drops and availability so you can find decent prices.
smart man, your right with a little patience you will have 2 nice plamsas for the price of what you would spend on one. actually with the forum sponsor coming out with such good pricing on the 5080 you might want to get the 5080 now and wait on the 6010/pro150hd to see if/when pioneer drops pricing or what they street for when released.
ishoong 06-14-07, 03:24 PM I have to make the same decision & same plan as you too. And I end up choose to wait for the 5080 over getting the 1140. And my 5080 will be arrive sometimes next week or maybe even this weekend. Did I see them side by side to compare! no! I even haven't seen a 5080 in front of me too, I just take the word from here and then place my order. I dun think you need to wait for a month for the 5080 being deliver & you should able to find someone not selling in msrp. It is impossible for us in Canada to buy stuff locally that is cheaper than you guys get in US!!!!
austex24 06-14-07, 05:19 PM I saw the 5080 today sitting between the 1140 and a Panasonic 50pz700u:
5080>1140>700u
Honestly the 8th gen smoked both sets, both in blacks and contrast. If it wasnt a side by side comparrison though, the 1140 sure is nice. The pannys looked like they have improved their proccessing, but its still not on par with the Pioneers.
I really cant describe how awesome the blacks were on the new 8th gen...Inky is the only way I can put it. Inky and really black.
Macfan424 06-14-07, 07:12 PM the 1140 is an excellent display.
is the 5080 better ,... yes. BUT unless your sitting there with them side by side you and the gf are gonna be very happy with the 1140... I agree with that.
Most people would be delighted with an 1140. It is good enough to currently be Consumer Reports highest rated 50" plasma, after all. (They haven't rated the newer ones yet.) And it's lower priced stable mate, the 5070 was CNET's choice. Last year's Pioneers are excellent sets.
Yes, the new ones are even better. If the blackest blacks are the be all and end all for you as it is for some, your only choice is the 5080 (at least until the other Pioneers become available).
But, however important ultra deep blacks may be to some people, others aren't especially aware of them. I had to point out the difference to a couple of salespeople (pros, not BB/CC kids) who had been looking at a 5080 for a few days and hadn't consciously noticed that the blacks were deeper than any of the other sets on the floor. Once I pointed it out, it was obvious to them, but it wasn't something that had drawn their attention away from the competition.
well, i still cant find anyone local that even has an idea of pricing other than giving me msrp numbers. 90% of those i call, even tweeter tell me that the x80 wont be out till september so they have no info on it.
scary to think that even high end stores either dont know what they are talking about or they just lay the bs thick to make a different sale.
but i digress, and the meanwhile zero hour is aproaching.
No bs. The sets aren't even out yet, so they don't know what they will charge yet. Wait until they are closer to coming out or until they come out - they'll give you the price then.
avguy1272 06-16-07, 04:02 PM Well with Tweeter filing for bankrupty it will be tough for them to get consistent product, which will further weaken them. As aways if you have a great local dealer and give them business (or at least give them a shot!) then they might share some backroom knowledge.
Here's the deal: 1080p big deal. Doesn't matter. The new Pana 50" 1080p vs. 1140 720p...and the winner is PRO-1140HD...video processing, video processing, video processing!
Those "salepeople" give good salepeople a bad name. If they don't, or can't see, better black levels then they shouldn't be "selling" the product. Lack of knowledge is bad for everyone!
PRO-950/1150 shipping late this month. 1080p in Sept. The MAP on the PRO-950HD is $ 3,200, MAP on the PRO-1150HD is $ 4,500. Don't whine about the price and it being "only 720p". You get what you pay for! BLACK LEVEL is EVERYTHING! Why do people LOVE CRT: BLACK LEVEL!!!!!!!!!
BTW, my warehouse just got the last shipment of 1140's and we are stocking up! At 3K we are selling nothing else.
Quit overthinking and buy a Pioneer Elite or if you can get one the 5080. At the worst it goes in the bedroom and you get a 60". Don't sweat 1080p.
jeff,
im sure you know the sets are out and people are already taking delivery on them. and as ive mentioned, even some local stores can get them, but they are all quoting msrp prices. so, id have to say it is "bs", especially when one of the salesmen tells me the 1140 is far better than the 5080 which he admittedly hasnt even seen yet since they wont be out till "september".
avguy, et all
i understand that many say 1080p is overdone, however, you are talking to a guy that sat 7' from a 55" rptv. im that wierdo that thx has in mind when they give their 36 degree recommendations.
besides, im not selecting a crappy 1080p set over a pio 768, im want the pio 1080 over the pio 768. and thats my end game, but i do "need" a set in the meantime...
so, im sure the 5080 is a step forward, just wish i could see it myself. the dilemma is answering whether or not the look of the set (i like side speakers), lan connectivity, and resale value (ooooo its an elite), are enough to balance the potential pq improvements of the 5080, especially since i can get the 1140 for 2.5k.
and without seeing one myself its impossible for me to answer, so im hoping one of you lucky gentleman/women who have seen/used both can chime in.
Sorry, I misread your post. I saw the mention of Sept so I thought you were referring to the 1080p Elites.and without seeing one myself its impossible for me to answer, so im hoping one of you lucky gentleman/women who have seen/used both can chime in.Look in the 8G threads, that's where all the discussion from the 5080 owners are...
Does anyone have problem with the Pioneer power supply?

While I agree with virtually most of your statements what is this about people being in love with CRT? That is one of the biggest POS concepts on this forum - very few and only a select small group of CRT's had great black levels and I owned one of them - the best Sony 36" but damn it simply could never match a large 16:9 panel and not even come close to the wow factors of these panels as good as the blacks and colors were it never had me going wow daily or could come close to what a 60" SXRD could throw up on the panel as far as shadow details. Deep blacks do not provide crap without shadow details and SIZE, I can state that going from a 45" to a 57" made HD movies new again something a CRT could never do - CRT DV = ZERO WOW FACTOR with the range at a weenie HT size of 36"!
Let's be honest the majority of CRT's were CRAP comparatively to this home theater panels or else they wouldn't be shuttled to the corners of the stores and then to extinction! Let's be honest about which and how few CRT's had that BLACK LEVEL and if you need reminding go visit a luxury hotel that still has them and they are crapvision IMO!
My 57" Sharp even with it's inferior blacks blows away any CRT in every respect and possesses daily wow factor the CRT NEVER Had and these Pio's certainly will go beyond that with the true Blacks to blow away CRT provided they bring the shadow details along for the ride - without those details BLACK means Nothing IMO. I do agree with most of your statement though. ;)
