WOW!!! Sony is really rocking with their switch to AVC encodes. This is hands down one of the most beautiful catalog titles I have laid my eyes upon. Not a speck of dirt and the most minute grain. It is a very sharp looking pic with most shots having tons of pop and depth to them. The color palette is subdued for the most part but when the colors are onscreen they are as lush and vivid looking as you can imagine. The audio is your typical 5.1 PCM with the surrounds getting lillte use but it does the job for this type of film. Now bring on Legends of The Fall Sony!!!

Here's hoping Sony can deliver the same goods on the remastered version of The Fifth Element.

I was also pleasantly surprised by it when I popped it in last night. You could see it was a catalog title, but it definitely got some love during production.

I think that DaVid (a well respected reviewer) is doing a review of this title this week, you’ll have to check, it may already be up on his website.

I watched it this morning and it looked really nice. I never saw even a hint of edge enhancement or anything else to whine about. I took a quick gander at the DVD to confirm the improvement, confirmed.

I'm kind'a suprised they stille don't have any extras such as a documentry about the Dali Lama....somethin'....

I enjoy "check your brain at the door" flicks but I agree that Blu-ray needs more "quality" to balance the abundance of popcorn crap available. This is one area where the studios, namely Warner and Universal have done a better job supporting the HD DVD format.

Seven Years in Tibet is a beautiful Blu-ray entry and it wets my appetite for Sony's forthcoming release of Lawrence of Arabia. I hope Fox gets back in the game and releases MGM's Dances With Wolves. Warner/BBC has already confirmed A Room With A View and recently Warner has also promised to release the titles currently HD DVD exclusives such as The Adventures of Robin Hood, Casablanca and Mutiny on the Bounty.

I guess we will just have to be patient and realize that we can't expect them to dump too much product on the market all at once. I think HD DVD did Blu-ray a big favor last year by delivering superior looking titles.. The Blu-ray camp seems to have learned their lesson and perhaps they are re-evaluating the schedules and taking the time to make sure that the films released are "ready for prime time." Though many of Universal's releases have looked great on HD DVD, some recent titles are looking like they were rushed to market in an effort to quickly offer catalog support for the format.

Screened this one earlier in the week, with DvdBoulet's review copy.
A terrific transfer (agree with Rachael and the OP) - there was absolutely no edge enhancement (PS3 1.8FW to Lumagen to Phelps'd JVC HD2K to 96"wide Silverstar). Some of the mountain shots are just stunning, as is the fine blowing dry snow in a few scenes. There was also no banding we could detect (and some of the scenes have a lot of sky where you might find that).

If only we could get Kundun in as good a BD transfer!

Let me just add that along with the spectacular snow-capped mountain vistas and lovely imagery of the Tibetan towns, there are also two gorgeous, albeit very brief, starfields of the night sky. They seemed to stand out in contrast to the other geological and man-made scenery that I had been watching in the film and took my breath away when I saw them.

It's a somewhat silly observation on my part, I know, but affected me enough to post here...lol.

I'd love to send the Dali Lama a copy of the High Llamas on CD. I stille think folks expect a few little extras. I suprised they didn't throw a little somethin in. Sony should get in the habit of doing so.....Thanks! :)

I've just received this today and just had a quick look at a few chapters and I have to say it's stunning! I'm really impressed and hope other catalogue titles maintain this quality.

Yeah, but how cool would it have been if Brad Pitt's head could have been on fire too...!

Bought it and watched it this weekend. I agree with the rave reviews of the picture quality on this one, including David Boulet's comment that it might be better than the PQ of the PotC movies. The color and detail in the Tibetan village was consistently fantastic. I had never seen the movie before and really enjoyed it.

Shame about Brad Pitt's ridiculous German accent. And of course, his trademark "I'm angry" bodily/facial twitches.

And then there were a few scenes he had no accent at all. I thought, "oh, maybe he's losing his accent living among the Tibetans." Then it came back. Oh well. I enjoy his performance as I would my favorite Muppet.

After you blow the film up to the size of a football field, I'm sure you'll find something wrong with the film that will prevent you from enjoying it.... ;) :)
