View Full Version : What do I need to build a tray for rope lighting?

This is a picture of my tray ceiling and I would like to put a piece of molding around the lower flat part just below where the sloped part starts. I have seen this done before but I don't know what kind of molding to use to make a "tray" for the rope light. Does anyone have suggestions or pictures of what you did?

Below where the sloped part starts? I would think you'd want to do it where the ceiling starts to slope, otherwise the moldings not going to make much of a tray.

It's just standard crown molding that I've seen. My brother-in-law just bought a new house and their builder did it in their dining room.

I am in the process of building one. If you want to see some pictures of the construction:

I am using crown molding with a small 3/4" spacer to create a larger cove. I am putting the crown molding upside down, it creates a slightly more horizontal lay to the molding.

Joseph, yes, it is at the base of the sloped part.

mbgon,

Your crown molding is upside down? It looks right to me. Did you just nail the base of the crown molding straight into the bottom of the other molding?

I guess it is all relative. Typically crown molding is installed with the finer details at the bottom. This is how I did it where the soffit meets the ceiling. Where the rope light sits, I reversed this. You can see it here in my mock-up.

So far I have just used brads to secure it and it is pretty stable. I also put a couple of angled braces over 3-4 feet for additional support. Can I do chin-ups on it? No, but I don't plan on using it for that and my kids will not be able to reach that high for another 7-10 years :D

There are probably a bunch of other ways to do it, this is just the way I came up with.

Thanks for the detail pic!! I see what you mean about the upside down. I would have never noticed that without the picture. I am not sure how well that will work with my ceiling since I don't have a full 90 degree angle to work with. I will need to play with it a little.

Or you can build a soffit with an extension for lights as I did here (http://nightskypictures.com/theater/theater.htm).

You may need to route an angled profile on the bottom of the molding so that it will lay the same way it would if it were attached to a 90 degree vertical surface. Otherwise, it may not look right when you attach it to your sloped wall.

Looked at your pictures. Question. First rope light shot is what color? Looks like an Orange. On the other shot, I assume that's a frosted whote light on a light blue ceiling?

It is actually the yellow LED from 1000bulbs.com but does look more amber/orange. Photos are very close to actual color appearance.

The second one is the white LED also from 100bulbs. It looks blue white due to the sky blue ceiling but is a bit bluish itself like most "white" LEDs.

These are on separate zones of the 6 zone Grafik Eye.

CCD your ceiling looks awesome. Do you have any close up pics of how you did your rope tray?

Mine was built (not by me) with a 1x1, then a piece of crown molding. We left a space at the bottom for staples for fabric, and I will add another decorative molding to, covering the staples and acting as a decorative cap for the crown.

I don't right now but plan to detail things a bit more once I get everything finished in a few weeks. Basically, it is just an extension of the bottom of the soffit inward by about 2.5 inches in past the vertical wall of the soffit and then a 3.5 inch wide (plus drywall) vertical cap on the inside of the extension, thereby forming the tray. The cap was firred down on the bottom by one inch so as to be flush with the fabric panels under the soffit.
