Apocalypto, The Descent and The Queen, among other high-profile films, will be distributed by Icon Film Distribution on the fledgling high-definition format HD VMD in the territories of Australia and New Zealand.

...

Apocalypto, The Descent and The Queen have already been released in the U.S. on Blu-ray through Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Lionsgate and Miramax Home Entertainment/Buena Vista, respectively—all studios that hold domestic distribution rights to these films. Additionally available at U.S. retailers are Universal Studios Home Entertainment’s The Hitcher as a combo DVD and HD DVD title and Paramount Home Entertainment’s We Were Soldiers on HD DVD and Blu-ray.

BD/HDDVD exclusive studios are releasing films in a completely different format in other regions. Not just the other format (as mentioned in the HDDVD forum with certain HDDVD imports), but a totally different HD media format altogether. What does this mean for those areas? I expect it to have little to no affect on the format war in the US but what of Australia and elsewhere?

This might have a better chance than the failed Chinese EVD's. Being that this is a French format, I personal would not give it my time of day. Remember Freedom Fries, not french fries.

If that's the case, i'll just bring them in from the US. Thats if they work on the Region B players.

At some point it will be a national pride thing, all we need is the belgians and the angolans to come up with their own codecs and media and DRM/noDRM and then it would really be fun.

Yes it was necessary. France is offering aid and comfort to "Sopranos" creator David Chase. Let's make them all pay!

Reading more on their strategy, I think the true killer here would be the Optikey Anti-Counterfeit Technology. This may make Fox and MGM finally release movies in HD.

Apologies for the french comment. I just had to, my brother is in Iraq fighting for our freedom.

<mildly political>
After the next election can we start calling them french fries again? I don't think anybody really ever went along with freedom fries anyway. It was a dumb idea.

That's one of most stupid stunts politicians pulled, a really pathetic example of style over substance :( BTW, it's back to French fries again.

VMD is not a French format anyway, it's more a British and Chinese format.

Don't be so ignorant.
If I could apologize for you I would.

I hope your brother comes home alive and well.

Freedom Fries is funny.

He's not ignorant, I laughed. French jokes never get old.

Anyway, back from our silly French bashing, here's a link to the small amount of info summarizing the VMD format at Wikipedia.com (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Versatile_Multilayer_Disc).

At least they were smart enough to not jump in the lake just because we did. ;)

I look forward to someone buying VMD here, I'd like to hear some first-hand accounts.

French format?

The company developing this has its global HQs in the UK.... maybe I'm missing something.

Otherwise, "heh".

I wonder how easy it would be to incorporate HD-VMD playback on bluray or hddvd players.

And more interesting to me, how soon can I get an inexpensive quad layer DVD burner to make these things myself?

Anybody have any idea if the disc blanks would be expensive?
