I know this is not suppose to happen and maybe its not but this is whats going on.Without the hack I put in a movie from library and stopped it and hit hdmi on remote and as i went through 480i -480p -720-1080 each time the screen did some changing around.I tried each setting and maybe it was my imagination but they all looked different with 720p as my favorite which i kept.As I was watching the dvd i hit the hdmi button and it said resolution was still 720p.
Is this the way the player works and even though it says you are watching upconversion through component you are only seeing 480p?I tried a few different discs and the player said it was upconverting them.I must admit its not night and day difference on my 433 pioneer plasma but the pq seemed slightly sharper.I was going to try the hack but im going to wait on this to see what replies I get. thanks Matt

was this "a movie from my library" by any chance a rip that had the CSS and MacroVision removed? These will upconvert on any hd capable output... :)

No it was a new movie(Breach). But I looked at a concert and a few other dvds and it performed the same way.

Don't know about that movie, but the 970 will "silently" go back to 480p without the hack *even* if you select 720p or 1080i.

You need to get the display to show you what it thinks it's getting, or do/not do something that depends on the input scan rate so that you can infer what's incoming. e.g. on my tosh 50hx81, when 1080i is being displayed, the stretch modes are disabled and when selected the display shows "not available", therefore when I get that message when trying to stretch, I'm getting 1080i.

Best,
jeff

Good point greeno and since I only had a a short time with the 970 I will really play around with it tonight.I just felt that it might say I was upconverting using the hdmi button on remote but while the dvd is playing and i hit button again it should(I think) say what resolution Im actually watching. In my case it upconverted to 720p and whilt watching the film it still said 720p.Shouldnt it fall back to 480p if it is showing that resolution.Thats why I think it is successfully upconverting.

The player's OSD will tell you it's 720p or 1080i when it is not. That's what "silently" revert to 480p means; the oppos lies ;-)

Doesn't your display have something you can look at to see what is coming in?

Well that ends my thinking that I was getting something with little effort. Now if someone could send me the hack or post it here and answer me this,Am i suppose to open the zip file and then burn it to cd or just burn the unzipped file to cd that Im suppose to put in my oppo.? Thanks Matt

Search and you shall find...

Follow this link to a utility that will patch the current (or beta) firmware available on oppo's website:

Thanks, but this is pretty confusing to someone with my lack of computer skills.Isnt there a simple patch that you just download and burn?

You need image burn to apply the iso file to the cd so that the dvd player can see it as firmware ,
so you need to unzip the file and imageburn will automatically find the image after you unzip it and burn it to a cd.
many try to use nero or some other app but the one mentioned before is the best for this application..

So just to summarize. 970 NOT hacked... if I set it to 1080i and watch a commercial, store bought DVD. It will drop down to 480p even though pressing the OSD button shows 1080i???

So the real litmus test is press the info on my Sony, it does show the current incoming resolution... and look at that?

I have to admit... like the original poster... I tried the same thing, thinking "this is working without the hack" LOL

But given I am a geek... I went ahead and put on the hack anyway.

I was even going to post a question "How do you know you have the hack working question???" I guess you put in a commercial DVD, set it to 1080i... and check your display to see what resolution is being reported.

Did I get that all about right?

Thanks in advance,

Rayo

Yes you did Rayo. check what the display is receiving from the player.
