View Full Version : I Think this setup is good can someone tell me
dangerdavedsp 06-15-07, 01:39 PM Alright so i am a college student with an internship this summer. So of course the first thing that comes to my mind is what should I do with all the money. To make a long story short I have decided to buy, what I like to call, my apartment theater, and i am only looking to spending no more than $5000
This is what I'm thinking about getting. Please give me your incite and or suggestions for these products or some other products I should get instead.
Panasonic TH-58PX600U
SVS SBS-01 7.1 Set Black with PB12-NSD
Onkyo TX-SR605
Toshiba HD-A20

That setup looks great, one question...how far away will you be sitting from your TV?

Are you looking for a vote/straw pole/congrats/or snide criticism? The display is terrific, the receiver will be just fine and I know nothing about the speakers.
If you are looking for advice or information, there are many many posts on the display and the receiver, player and speakers. If you want something more specific on a feature, do the research and ask the question specifically.
It will be helpful if you tell us your budget, room dimensions and objectives, e.g., music (and what kind) first and movies second. Concerns such as avoiding the police responding to the next door neighbors' calls.
Viewing distance is a consideration in screen size and resolution. The difference between 1080p and 720p diminishes with distance. Look here for more info (http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html), although the site is slightly obsolete it is a good place to start.
Enjoy that 58" display :D
dangerdavedsp 06-15-07, 03:07 PM ok well my budget is on my first post and i just want the best i can get with it. im looking for some incite on to whether i should get something different that is better. any comments would be helpful even if the are snide or mean or whatever. i just want some peoples opinion on to what i should do.
eugovector 06-15-07, 03:12 PM "insight", I wouldn't have said anything, but you did it twice. You're college will thank you for not embarrassing them during your internship.
Look, if you've got $5k burning a holein your pocket, go to Best buy and go nuts. If you want to make an informed decision, and get some opinions here, you're going to need to answer the questions posed to you. There is no "best".
Trekguy covered the important questions, I won't re ask them.
dangerdavedsp 06-15-07, 03:17 PM dude you dont have to be a dick. so i made a mistake in spelling. im not on this site to be made fun of, im here to get help in making an informed decision.
eugovector 06-15-07, 03:21 PM any comments would be helpful even if the are snide or mean or whatever.
It wasn't a question of spelling. "Incite" is a word also, it just doesn't mean what you think it means.
If you want input about your system, you need to answer the questions posed to you.
I have to agree with eugovector. There are some basic info that is needed in order to help with recommendations. From the looks of it the equipment is great, however if you were to put that tv in a 10X10 room, then the tv might be a tad large. just my 2 cents.
dangerdavedsp 06-15-07, 03:42 PM well i want a big tv, just like any other man, but the room would be about 11'6 X 16'0. im just wondering what i should get for that room that equal in cost to $5000. and im not really sure what other questions to answer.

Let us know your "objectives, e.g., music (and what kind) first and movies second. Concerns such as avoiding the police responding to the next door neighbors' calls." Also your seating distance; take a guess if you don't know. After that we can give you a short opinion, but it's probably going to sound like "yep, the system you listed in your first post sounds fine".
Take trekguy's advice and use the search feature to find old threads. If you're not willing to do a little legwork, avsforums isn't the place for you. We won't feed you generic maxims like the guy at Cirucuit City or Best Buy. We will help you learn about the prinicples behind HT and AV, which you can then use to make future decisions. It's a "teach a man to fish" philosophy.
If you're not interested in learning to fish, you need to hire someone for a couple hundred bucks to purchase and install your system, or be okay with making a non-life-threatening mistake or two.
trekguy 06-15-07, 04:47 PM How embarrassing! :o I did not see the $5K budget.
Things you can research to find more information.
Seating location-
Use the link I posted earlier to locate your seat. But--
Do not sit halfway between the wall behind the front speakers and the back wall.
Do no sit close to the back wall.
Try to arrange the speakers as suggested by Dolby in their room layout and speaker setup pages.
Room treatments/acoustics--
Beware the frumious first reflections and set real traps for the bass.
Wire and cable--
All that glitters is not gold.
14 AWG speaks for itself.
Monstrous Cable is just that.
It is a Tos-up between optical and 75 ohm digital audio.
Amplifier power--
Twice the power is not twice the sound level (not nearly).
Speaker effeiciency is a big part of the loud equation.
