View Full Version : No Labyrinth?
stumlad 06-15-07, 07:31 PM So, on August 14th, Sony is releasing Labyrinth anniversary edition on DVD. The quesiton is -- why is it not going to be on Blu-Ray??
Blu-Ray's biggest advantage over HD-DVD is studio support, starting with their own... Why do they choose to not release all titles in both DVD and Blu-Ray? They could easily make the format war lopsided.... Dark Crystal is another one they are not going to be releasing... Why??
Don't get me wrong, it would stupid for Sony to throw their entire library onto blu-ray all at once, but I figured when a movie is re-released, they could at least offer it in both formats... if you don't, then what does it say about your faith in your own product?? Imagine what it would say if they DIDNT release the spider-man set in Blu-Ray this fall....
C'mon - if you want us to believe in your format, prove to us that you believe in it. What's the big deal? It's not like you won't re-release it another 5 times anyway...

Well if you check the insider thread you'll see that Paidgeek said that they aren't in the making for 2007 for Blu-Ray, it's not a 100% sure decision. With the rescent Sony Catalog release looking awesome, i think they should wait it a little to clean this one. I'am pretty sure the 20th edition have the same pictures then the last one but repackage with more extra..
stumlad 06-15-07, 08:14 PM I didn't see the insider thread. I did a search in the blu-ray software thread for Labyrinth and all I really found were references to Pan's Labyrinth -- which I also would like to get....
Well, I guess I'd rather wait for a good release than to have a DVD quality release. I was thinking that the 20th anniv edition would be remastered and figured they'd put it out on both. I guess if they are not remastering, it's a good thing it wont be on Blu ray
Jedi2016 06-16-07, 01:37 AM I'm not real big on Labyrinth, but I'd be all over The Dark Crystal on Blu-ray. That would certainly irk the hell out of the red fanboys, seeing as how it's a Universal film.. hehe (Sony owns the home video distribution rights).
I was hoping to see a release about it after reading the release on the new DVD sets for both films, since it mentions that new masters were created for the new DVDs. Since they'd be stupid not to make high-def masters in this day and age (which is likely what the DVDs are being made from), it makes sense that there's a brand new high-def master sitting at Sony for both of these films, and it would thusly be a cakewalk to just pop 'em each onto a BD disc.
AaronSCH 06-16-07, 12:40 PM Yep, new masters and a second disc of extras for both The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. I am hopeful this means high def incarnations for both this year.
balanceofpower 06-16-07, 01:45 PM I will be all over Labyrinth if it is indeed restored. The Superbit DVD version is not that great. :( I'd love to see what all details are to be picked up on in HD that have always been lost in SD.

This is a quote from www.dvdfile.com:
Sony is preparing 14 August release date for Anniversary Editions of Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. Labyrinth – that beloved David Bowie/Jennifer Connolly vehicle – will come with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, newly-discovered footage (found at director Jim Henson’s home!), as well as an hour’s worth of featurettes and some interviews. The Dark Crystal will also come with a new anamorphic widescreen transfer, more footage recovered from Henson’s home, a new commentary from conceptual designer Brian Froud, as well as another hour’s worth of new featurettes. Each title carries an SRP of $24.96. A Blu-ray Disc release for these films may not be too far off...
The last line sounds good. It's purely speculation at this point, but it would be great. I've been holding off on watching a lot of movies because I'm waiting for them to be released in high def before I do so...
I'd really like to see MirrorMask as well on Blu-Ray (or Hd-dvd..whichever it comes on)

Pure speculation. I'd love a Blu-Ray release of either films, but it seems very doubtful right now.
This would be a movie that might actually get me to say screw it to waiting for the inevitable PS3 price drop. So much for Sony taking full advantage of owning a large catalog to influence the adoption of their format.
Dan Hitchman 06-17-07, 01:09 AM Jennifer Connelly in HD! Hell yeah! I too like Labyrinth, but both it and The Dark Crystal haven't aged well for me (having viewed both recently again). The puppetry and grand imagination shown is astounding, don't get me wrong. However, they just seemed like they were written for young children more than for both age groups like a PIXAR film.
I kind of like the darker, more surreal The Story Teller with John Hurt series more (short lived as it was).

They're in the category of dark children's films of the 80s (ie Return to Oz, Neverending Story). Too bad no one is making them anymore and if they are they're not for children (Pan's Labryinth).
Count me as one who can't wait for the Blu-ray release of Labyrinth. I love Hoggle, who was voiced by Jim Henson's son, Brian Henson. Hoggle's voice rocks, as does his look. :)
The sets, costumes, muppets, matte paintings, and overall special effects have aged pretty well. However, the main thing that hasn't aged well is the scene with those crazy reddish bug-eyed dancing muppets in the forest who harrass Sarah. It's horrendous compared to today's effects. I cringe when that sequence comes up. I cringe not because of the acting/singing, but because of the way it's executed. I like the song they sing and those creatures are a little scary when they start talking about taking her head off. Anyway, I guess this is what happens when movies age. Bad special effects begin to show their true colors. I still love this movie.
Donnie Eldridge 03-13-08, 12:56 PM An old favorite of mine. Fingers crossed.
