View Full Version : Better match for Ultra/2
swgiust 06-16-07, 12:04 PM I currently own a PB12-Ultra/2. (maple). Would like to add a second sub. Should of bought another Ultra when I had the chance but money was tight.
So now I am debating a Plus/2 or the new Ultra 13. Have chatted with Ed and
basically the Plus/2 will be alittle more stout above 40-80 hz and the new Ultra will
be more stout between 18-35hz.
Being the price is almost exactly the same, which would you chose?
Plus/2 "box" would match my Ultra box.
Room size is 18x18. Treated with traps and panels from GIK acoustic. Using an SMS-1.
Although more output is always nice, the main goal is to smooth the response I am getting now. I do like that "punch in the gut" grunt from a sub.
mojomike 06-16-07, 12:19 PM The new Ultra should prove to be a great sub, but I think the Plus/2 would match your current sub more closely both is appearance and soundwise due to having the same tuning.
I would either sell the Ultra/2 and get two new 13 Ultras or keep the old Ultra/2 and pair it with a Plus/2.
Option #3 would be to keep a look out for a used Ultra/2 and pick up one of those. When the new Ultra hits the market, you might see some old Ultra /2's showing up used.
OvalNut 06-16-07, 12:26 PM I'd go with a used Ultra/2 that will be popping up on the market in a couple months. There are a few people on this forum and others who I know have already preordered Ultra 13's and will be selling their Ultra/2 subs.

Mixdoctor 06-16-07, 02:18 PM I have Dual Ultra's and I would only match them with another Ultra.
Warpdrv 06-16-07, 03:18 PM The new ultras are coming out, and there will be alot of people unloading their old Ultras in a very short time...
I would hold on to see what happens in the next could months...
ravingndrooling 06-17-07, 11:43 AM Depending on what kind of speakers you are using, a +2 would'nt be a bad idea. I love my twin Ultras, but lets be honest, they are a little short up high. I have a Velo SMS that helps tremendously, but have thought about adding a +2 for a little extra up high. Soon enough, there will be plenty of both on the used market. :D

Can you explain what you mean by up high? Are you saying you feel the Ultra is
short on power in the upper frequencies?
There happens to be a couple of plus/2's in maple (my color) in b-stock.
Tweakophyte 06-18-07, 08:46 AM Will the subs be co-located? If you have room for 2 Ultra/2 have you thought about selling that and getting 2 of the new single-driver Ultras?
Any pics of the room?
I agree, the best thing to do is wait for another of your same model sub to become availble on the used market. Remember to make sure you are getting the same driver that is in your sub as well.
swgiust 06-18-07, 10:15 AM I'm really not interested in selling my Ultra. It's a damn good sub. More than likely the subs would be in the two front corners, left and right. I am not opposed to placing the subs anywhere in the room, if it makes them sound right. Although based on their size, I wouldn't want them together.
My room is square, 18x18. 13ft vaulted ceiling.
Center of the front wall is my tv, 70" JVC, then the entertainment center, then my front speakers, then to the right outside, my sub.
Based on what I am reading here and what Ed from SVS is e-mailing me, a Plus/2
Ultra/2 combo might not be too bad. Reasons for this: I can buy the sub with warranty from SVS. There shipping is MUCH less than you can ship yourself. The cabinet would match. Reasons against: Different drivers with a slightly different response.
I would love to get another Ultra, but somebody is going to have to sell me one in
the $ 750 range. You figure $ 250 freight and it's an even grand. If I am going to spend more than that, I might as well buy a brand new Ultra.

What ever you do good luck.
I still think it would be a good idea to look into to selling your sub and getting a new ultra it will at least match it in output and have a lower tune and better SQ and you could always pick a pair and then you get customer discount and a pair count I believe as well.
Also with two new ultras you would aslo have more tune options and the ablity to go sealed if you liked.
But like I said good luck I wish I was the one having to make this decision because really you can't loose either way.
Tweakophyte 06-19-07, 09:09 AM Hi-
For smoother response (per your comment) take a look at the Harmon paper on sub placement. The two corners might not be the best place.
Look like you've got some nice options... it is nice that two of those sub fit in your room.
swgiust 06-19-07, 11:47 AM I'm definatley not afraid to move the subs around. I just don't want then right next to each other.
SVS has a plus/2 in Maple in b-stock. I'm really thinking.....
swgiust 06-20-07, 02:10 PM I know we are not supposed to talk prices, other than list. But, what would one expect to pay for a good used Ultra/2?
Let's break it down.
The sub was about $ 2400 new (with freight)
There is a new sub coming out, with very comparable performance, for about $ 1,400.
So, in my opinion, that makes a used ultra/2 worth less than $ 1400. Considering
that freight will be about $ 250.00, somebody is going to have to be willing to sell one in the $ 800 range. Is that a realistic expectation????
Any of you that have the new sub on pre-order, what are you going to sell your old ultra's for??
Mixdoctor 06-20-07, 05:07 PM I am selling my dual PB12 Ultra's soon, Piano Gloss Black. I can only ship one as I only have one box. The other to be picked up in the NYC area.

Short on power? No. Shorter on output? Yes. In my room I had to cut about 10db from 50Hz on down, while above, I had to add 3-4db. I LOVE my Ultras and still wouldn't trade them for the world :D

Can you give just a ballpark estimate of what you are going to sell them for?
swgiust 06-25-07, 10:29 AM I have posted a WTB in the subwoofer for sale section. If anybody is looking to unload an Ultra/2, PM me. Thanks.
