Ive just bought oppo970 and want to run it with my Radio Shack 15-2116 universal remote.No room in it to learn any commands so i need a code to get it to run the oppo970. thanks Matt

There's no built-in code as the 2116 is an old remote. If you go the JP1 route, it will eliminate your learning restrictions as well as give you access to discrete On/Off commands for the 970, as well as other components. Go to www.hifi-remote.com for more info.

Thanks,the jp1 route is a bit complicated.I have tried teaching my 15-2116 some of the oppo970 commands but I ran out of memory pretty quick.Cant delete any of commands from devices with codes active,only the memory commands and they dont give you many.Anyone know a way to delete programmed devices to open up more memory.Im only using 5 devices and three are not in use and if I could get memory from them I would be fine. Thanks MATT

There's no way to free up more memory for learned commands outside of JP1. You can do some amazing things with the 2116 (especially for a $20 remote), but you need JP1 to unlock its capabilites. Doing some of the basic things in JP1 is not that difficult. Check Rob's "JP1 - How Easy Is It?" column here (http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/help/index.shtml).

plus, to add on what Mike wrote, you can't delete pre-programmed setup codes. they are in rom.

Follow the link Mike gives. it's not that hard to do some basics things.

I wrote to oppo on my problem and they said they had new firmware that would allow me to use universal remote.Its firmware 4a-0209.Has anyone used this and does it allow universal remotes to recognize oppo 970?

I've not heard that. It (the new firmware) might help, but I think that they would need to tell you what device setup code the player will now respond to, for this to be of help. At the simplest level, that's how universal remotes work. they have a bunch of built in setup codes that you select and they emit the codes for that device. There are *many* different ways that IR devices communicate.

I could be wrong though...

Well they said it will share codes with either toshiba,marantz,zenith or magnavox and you need to try them all until you find which works.My remote has codes for all those brands so its worth a shot.I have faith in oppo after being knocked out by the 970 pq.I just dont want to srew up my new player by inputting this firmware.
