My Rotel receiver has only 2 optical inputs and for now all my sources have only optical out. I saw on Monoprice that there are optical splitters (2 or 3 in/1 out) or optical to digital coaxial adapters, both scenarios would work for me. Have you ever tried one of these? Which one would give better sound, and is there any degradation on the signal? Any recommendation on brand/type?

I used the Dayton coaxcial to Optical converter from Parts Express. No problem with the sound quality.. Using it from cable box to receiver for digital sound. Hope this helps..
