Hey guys- I am combining my audio and video into one room- I normally keep my mains about 5-6' out in the room BUT now that I am building a screen wall the" BOSS" wants everything hidden- So how do I keep my mains 5' infront of the screen and build a wall around it- Or can i put my mains (ATC) off the stands and put them on the floor and then they would fit under the screen and build the screen wall ( though I would lose all depth for music as the speakers would only be about 18" from the back wall!!)

HELP!!!!

Bill,

I may not be understanding your speaker placement as you have posted here. I can tell you that I have a H/T that is a 7.1 System and the front Main-Speakers are in line to the left and right of the screen. They are in my case turned towards the main seating Hot-Spot for sound. The Cntr. speaker is on a stand and sits in the center of screen at the bottom. I should have said that the Main speakers are on stands also. This is a professional install and once again in my case the speakers on there stands are at ear level. The center speaker is on a dedicated stand that tilts the center speaker up towards the listeners Hot-Spot.

I hope this helps you out some. This does not really say how to Hide the Speakers but it is the correct placement (IMHO). I did a lot of research when I 1st decided to have my H/T installed. Everything I read said the same thing on the placement of the speakers.

BTW, I should perhaps mention this. The install and placement of all speakers was also set up with a sound level meter. So each speaker reached the listening Hot-Spot with the same level of sound. I'm sure there are name brand SPL Meters, but I just went to radio shack and bought one so that I could fine tune the placement myself once I was more comfortable with the system and how it sounded.

What speakers are you using? If your speakers are large, full range, moving them back close to the walls (compared to where you presently have them) will likely result is a loss of midrange clarity and bass definition. How much change will occur is a function of the type of speakers you have and where you place them (how close to the surrounding walls, placement relative to the center, height issues, etc.). I assume your current speaker placement (5-6' into the room) for your audio listening worked well in your room.

The general rule is to setup the L/R/C at an equal level with the listener's ears (while seated). If that is not possible, or desired, then try and keep the center speaker's tweeter within a couple of feet of the L/R tweeters. Tilt/angle the center toward the seated listener's ears.

You should experiment with speaker placement/angles to determine what works best. If you've got to hide the speakers, perhaps getting new speakers designed for that purpose would provide the best solution. Of course, what you have now may also work.

thanks guys- i am using ATC powered speakers- my screen will take up most of my wall so I cannot place the speakers on the outside of the screen-If I place the speakers on the ground then I can place them under the screen but I am afraid of bass resonance off the floor-bill

Sorry Bill, I just re-read your post and saw the ATC's. Yes, unfortunately your options appear limited. Are you able to get proper screen height with the speakers (considering their height) for proper viewing? BTW, I can see why you wouldn't want to change out speakers. :)
