is there a way i can shut off the audio feed via HDMI on my elite? it makes a TERRIBLE echo with the TV and surroudn sound on (using optical). and if i mute it, it willc constantly say "mute" in the corner which is annoying.
any way to do that or no?
Most TVs (at least all TVs that I have ever had) allow you to turn off TV's speakers (look in menu->sound settings or something similar). Turning TV's speakers this way will not show "mute".
But I suspect you are using TV's speakers from time to time. Right?

i only use the TV speakers when i watch cable TV.
i coudl use the internal mute, or turn the volume down. i jstu wish there was a way i coudl set up the xbox to not output audio over hdmi. my PS3 uses HDMI video and optical audio with no issues.
eh, oh well

What kind of TV? I found a setting on my Uncle's Samsung (somewhere) that allowed me to turn off the word "mute". My Mitsubishi doesn't place it up there.
