View Full Version : What do you think of this plan!

I have a great system, but am really unhappy with the room. The room is 21 x 21.5, and is used as our family room, home theater and 2 channel audio. The room currently has a 8 foot opening leading to the kitchen dinning room, which we will put french doors, so we can close it off.

I got my inspiration from this picture.

This plan would require us to fill in one window and door to the exterior of the room. This would still leave one sliding glass door and window for light when we want to be a family room.

This is very rough, but somewhat to scale.

This is the current room as it sits today.

This is the wall that would have the windows and door filled it.

This is the back wall that would get the platform for some chairs.

This is the opening that would get the french doors, and when closed we would have a heavy curtain to cover them.

Thanks for your input.

Hey- pls take this with a grain of salt, because I don't even have a HT yet (not at that stage of life yet) but I'm learning lots here :) - you have a nice room, and a pretty good plan. The only thing that caught me off guard was the seating rows out of alignment. I see that you don't want to put chairs in front of the sliding glass door (of course). If I were in your situation, I would truly evaluate how many people I'd need to have primo seats for at one time. From there, I would either go with two in-line rows of seats that are positioned closer to the screen (but still within suggested distances based on screen size etc), or one larger row of 5 or 6 seats - maybe something with an overall fairly narrow footprint?

also, consider the effect of listening positions if you go with staggered rows (ie. the person in the corner might not have the optimal sound experience)

With a square room there may be some problems. If you want clean LFE and bass you may want to think about making that into two rooms.

A sliding glass door in all likelihood will cause you sound reflection problems, particularly if it's directly behind seating. You'll get very strange sound reflecting to you ears from it.
