View Full Version : "Gamer Generation" on Discovery HD
jason10mm 06-18-07, 08:44 AM Did anyone catch this two part show last night? Talks about the state of gaming and a bit about the cultural impact. Didn't go much into the technology of games, but did have some nice high-res clips :P
I thought the stuff about the Arabic game companies trying to "combat" the wave of American games flooding their countries was particularly interesting. It is odd to see that their answer to military/anti-terrorist games featuring arabic bad guys is to create a guerilla/terrorist shooting game. At least the targets seemed to be Israeli military/police, instead of non-combatants. Strange that they didn't focus on an actual military campaign like the 6 day war or something, but since they lost that one, I guess skipping it is understandable. I wonder if the sequel to "Under Seige" will have the player trying to take hostages :P
I thought the MRI stuff was a joke. I bet ANY competitive game, be it a FPS shooter or co-op pong, would stimulate the "anger" center of the brain. It's not called the "flight or fight" reflex for nothing!
Seeing the Korean crowd assembled to watch Starcraft just floored me. I would love to see a match. Looks like they have distilled Starcraft down to a reflex game, I don't see how they could have much strategic planning since they must have the maps totally memorized. Now I know why Starcraft 2 was announced over there :P
Anyhoo, I'll watch the second part tonight. Hopefully it will show more games and not focus so much on pet politics.
ooPAYNEoo 06-18-07, 09:50 AM I flipped between this and the game last night. Was interesting, but seemed a little dated? I enjoyed the 2nd epp, about Vitual worlds, and how people buy game status with real $.
That guy neverdie spent $100000 on his own real estate, and rents digital apartments from $100 to $1000 a month! Quit the day job, and profits!
Anyone interested in starting something like this?? :D
Shizelbs 06-18-07, 04:26 PM Thanks for the heads up. Sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out.
chrisherbert 06-18-07, 04:50 PM I didn't like the way it focused on the same things that you always see in mainstream media about games. Who cares about Postal? Who cares about that crappy Palestinian game? It also paid too much attention to PC games, which are less and less important.
Sardaan 06-18-07, 05:23 PM The Korean gaming was very interesting, I have read alot about it. But to see it in action was wowzers.
Starcraft is an actual sport in Korea. You could make an entire show just about the Blizzard impact on Korea.
mikesketball 06-18-07, 07:04 PM I agree that the show focused on the same points that mainstream media does. It would have been better to show some counter-points from actual gamers.
The middle eastern game and the kids reaction to it was a tad scary IMO.
Nice how they rerun so many things all week, but DHD doesn't show this again till saturday at 3am. DVR set.
orogogus 06-19-07, 03:18 PM I thought the bit about the Romanian powerlevelers (farmers) was pretty funny.
Also liked the commentary from the guy at Wired- he is spot on about online gaming currency of time. In fact I personally think this is the primary flaw with the current state of MMOGs in general. Bad juju for those with lives and/or addictive personalities.
I think when the first brain-computer link is invented the world will officially end. :p

LOL, and the recipients of the farming, were bragging about it at CHURCH!
"Well, MY honey will be at level 40 this week!"
And the couple's daughter didn't seem too happy when her mommy got her character back from the level farm...
"oh honeybun sorry, I have ... to..Check EMAIL! Bye!! See ya next month!"
Used my HD DVR... Very interesting... :)
maximuslcd 06-20-07, 10:01 AM LOL I'll watch almost anything on discovery HD, its the best HD signal out there :D
all of my SD channels just dont hardly get watched anymore
prayformojo 06-25-07, 12:32 PM Decent show; however, I did not care for the one-sidedness surrounding video game violence. Is anyone surprised that anger and aggressiveness are triggered while playing the game, I'd be much more interested in what happens when the game is off.
VegasFlyby 06-25-07, 01:08 PM Thanks for the info. The Tivo has been set!

Search on Youtube they have a ton of matches of the best players in finals of tourneys.
Pretty kickass stuff. I saw a stat once were they showed the top player was hitting 340ish keystrokes a minute
You can also check out wikipedia for the names of some good players and plug those into youtube.
formulanerd 06-25-07, 08:18 PM have this dvr'd (in hd) havent got a chance to watch it just yet.
