View Full Version : Boosting Audio to DVD Recorder

I wondered if anyone knows if I can boost the audio from my Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD cable box to my Toshiba DR-500 DVD recorder? The sound on recorded DVDs from my cable box is so low, it almost maxes out my speakers, but the sound on recorded DVDs from other sources (camcorder, etc) is fine (leading me to believe it's the cable box, not the DVD recorder).

Thanks for any suggestions.

This is a clunky fix; I don't know if I'd like it permanently, but it should work. I can't think of anything better at the moment without building your own gain circuit.

If you have a spare cassette deck or MD recorder - anything with a record level setting, you could pass the audio through it and boost it til at -3 to 0 dB.

If the signal is ridiculously low, you should probably at least try to try a different STB. It could be defective

If swapping STBs does not help I would complain to the cable company - sounds like they are doing something wrong.

BTW, I notice that when I record onto my EH55 from a Comcast Motorola 6412 via analog inputs that indeed the sound level is low when I play it back through the analog inputs of my AVR. However, switching to the digital input from the EH55 makes a big difference in SPL, and bass sounds much better as well. Are you using your TV speakers or a receiver and surround sound system? If the latter, be sure to use the recorder's digital output to the AVR.
